Similarly, if you own a two wheeler then it is mandatory by law as per the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 to purchase a third party bike insurance policy. A third party liability insurance policy would protect you against financial losses which you may suffer:

The base premium for third party liability insurance depends on the cubic capacity of the two wheeler’s engine. The Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority of India (IRDAI) revises the rates for base premium every year. As per the recent guideline by Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, insurers are directed to offer five year third party liability for new two wheelers. Hence, the policy for a new two wheeler vehicle will cover the TP premium for 5 Years.

Note: There is compensation up to Rs1 lakh for third-party property damage for a two wheeler. If there is a case of injuries/death, it will be taken into the court tribunal.
An own damage insurance cover would protect you from losses suffered due to damages caused to your vehicle by an accident, manmade damages, theft or natural calamity.
If you already have a long-term third-party bike insurance, you can opt for a standalone own damage cover to get a wholesome coverage for your vehicle. An own damage insurance cover would protect you from losses suffered due to damages caused to your vehicle by: • An accident, • Manmade damages, • Theft • Natural calamity.
Remember that this cover does not provide coverage against third-party liabilities. As third-party liability insurance is compulsory, own damage cover can be bought only if you already have a long-term third-party insurance.
