Parkinson's Disease

What Is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative brain disorder that takes years to develop symptoms and usually shows up during old age. The disease affects the central nervous system and happens to affect the movement of the body.

What Triggers Parkinson’s Disease?

  • Increasing age
  • Gender; It is more common in men
  • Severe head injury in the past
  • Unknown consistent exposure to the pesticides/ metals and other such chemicals
  • Genetic factors

How Would You Know If You Have Parkinson’s Disease?

  • Common signs of Parkinson’s disease include, tremors. It is worse with rest and gets better when the person is mobile.
  • Stiffness in the muscles
  • Slow reflex actions
  • Stooped posture
  • Gradual loss of facial expressions
  • Problems in balancing; more prone to falling
  • Difficulty in swallowing
  • Gradual decrease in mental functioning
  • Depression and loneliness

What Should You Do In Case Your Symptoms Worsen?

  • When you notice early symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, make sure you visit a doctor for its diagnosis. Though the diagnosis of the disease in the early stages is very difficult, and a major chunk of the patients remain undiagnosed.
  • The doctor will first examine you physically and ask you for relevant symptoms. There is no specific test to diagnose the disease. However, a few medical examinations can be done to confirm the same.
  • The doctor shall ask you to get a CT scan, MRI and PET scan done. These medical reports along with the symptoms that you may experience, shall together help in diagnosing the problem.

What Are The Available Treatment Options?

  • Once the diagnosis is confirmed, the doctor will prescribe you with medications that shall help to restore the proper balance of neurotransmitters essential for brain function.
  • Researchers have also explored Stem cells as a treatment option for people with Parkinson’s disease.
  • The doctor will also suggest you to take physiotherapy on a daily basis as it will improve your balance and motor skills. You must include muscle strengthening exercises in your daily routine.
  • At times the patients are also kept on antidepressants to reduce chances of depression and social isolation.

Are There Any Natural Remedies For Parkinson’s Disease?

You can try these effective natural remedies and lifestyle changes to ease your symptoms:

1. Avoid Proteins For Dinner

Ways to Use:

A diet rich in proteins often interferes with the absorption of certain standard medications that are prescribed in Parkinson’s disease. Therefore, make sure you avoid proteins in your dinner.

2. Broccoli

Ways to Use:

Broccoli is a rich source of fiber, Vitamin C, calcium, iron and magnesium. Include broccoli in your daily diet in the form of a salad.

3. Ginger

Ingredients: Ginger

Ways to Use:

Ginger has been found to be beneficial in reducing chances of nausea in case of diseases such as Parkinson’s. You may choose to add ginger to your meals or have it as a supplement as well.

4. Papaya

Ways to Use:

Papaya, rich in antioxidants and an enzyme called papain, has been found to benefit people with Parkinson’s disease. You can add it to your daily bowl of fruits and salad.

Eat a healthy and balanced diet to avert the chances of constipation (a common side effect of the medicines prescribed in Parkinson’s). It is important for you to bring in some lifestyle alterations as well, such as quit smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, practice meditation and regular exercise to stay fit.
