Heat Stroke

What Is Heat Stroke?

Heat stroke is a condition wherein the body is overheated due to prolonged exposure to high temperatures. Heat stroke is amongst the most common problems of the summer season, especially for a country like India. As can be inferred, it requires emergency treatment to avoid any complications and damage to the other body organs.

What Triggers Heat Stroke?

  • Exposure to hot environment
  • Staying in the sun for longer hours
  • Strenuous activity
  • Wearing excess clothing

How Would You Know If You Have Heat Stroke?

  • You may experience high body temperature (104 F or above), altered mental state or behavior, alteration in sweating, nausea and vomiting.
  • Skin may turn red as the body temperature increases
  • Rapid breathing and racing heart rate
  • Throbbing headache

What Should You Do In Case Heat Stroke Worsens?

  • In case the condition worsens, make sure you go indoors. Remove the excess clothing
  • Cooldown the body temperature by siting in a cool tub of water or by taking a cool shower
  • You can also choose to use ice packs or wet towels on the person’s head, neck and armpits.
  • Still if the symptoms do not get better, make sure you see a doctor.

What Are The Available Treatment Options?

  • Your doctor will examine you physically. After that, in case of severity he may recommend a few tests to check if any of the organs are damaged.
  • For immediate relief, immerse in cold water to lower down the temperature
  • In case the ice pack or cold water therapy induces shiver, you may choose to take muscle relaxants to ease the pain
