Ear Infection
What Is an Ear Infection ?

Ear Infection (medically known as otitis externa) is an inflammation (redness and soreness) of the ear canal that extends from the eardrum to the outside. Children are more susceptible to ear infections compared to adults.

What Triggers an Ear Infection ?
  • Bacterial infection
  • Fungal infection
  • Injury to the ear canal
  • Disorders such as Diabetes
  • Accidental entry of the chemical products
  • Irritation from cotton swabs or metal objects
  • Excess of moisture
How Would You Know If You Have An Ear Infection?
  • You may experience pain and itching in the ear
  • Tugging or pulling of an ear
  • Difficulty in sleeping
  • Slight fever
  • Discharge of pus from the ear
  • Temporary loss of hearing
  • Small, painful lumps or boils in the ear canal
What Should You Do In case Your Symptoms Worsen?
  • To relieve pain instantly, you can take over-the-counter pain relieving medicines.
  • In general, ear infection gets better within a few days (1-2 days). In case it does not and you observe severe ear pain along with blood or pus discharge, make sure you see a doctor.
  • Your doctor will first examine you physically (with a help of a lighted instrument) and ask you for the symptoms. He will then recommend you a few medical tests to investigate the cause of the condition.
  • Your doctor may also suggest a few additional tests such as tympanometry (to measure the movement of the eardrum) and acoustic reflectometry (to measure the reflection of the sound)
What Are The Available Treatment Options?
  • In general, an ear infection resolves without taking antibiotics. However, depending on the diagnosis and severity of the symptoms, your doctor may prescribe you pain relievers.
  • You can also try warm compress to reduce pain
  • In case of a severe infection (bacterial/ fungal), you may be prescribed with antibiotics or anti-virals to treat the condition.
