What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body is either unable to produce or regulate the glucose content in the blood. In general, the glucose levels are controlled by the insulin hormone which is produced in the pancreas.


There are two main types of diabetes:

In Type I Diabetes, which affects 5% of the total diabetes population, the body is unable to produce insulin. The body destroys its own insulin producing cells and causes the glucose levels to rise significantly.


In Type II Diabetes, which affects 95% of the total diabetes population, the body is unable to use the produced insulin. This leads to high glucose levels

  • It is most commonly caused due to an autoimmune response generated by the body that impairs the production of insulin hormone
  • People with a family history of the disease are also prone to diabetes.
  • Sedentary lifestyle

  • A viral or bacterial infection in the pancreas (pancreatitis) may also be the specific cause Type I diabetes.

How Would You Know If You Have Diabetes?

  • The warning signs of Diabetes are usually very mild and are hard to notice.
  • Excessive hunger may be considered as a warning sign
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent urination (especially at night)
  • Loss of weight
  • Increased thirst

  • The doctor may ask you if you have family history of the disease and shall ask you to get investigations done
  • Based on the glucose levels, he will suggest relevant medication and diet changes to you
