Depression

What Is Depression ?

Depression is a mood disorder characterized by symptoms (mild, moderate or severe) that interfere with the everyday chores. It often rips up off energy, hope and motivation to do anything and makes you feel sad and unhappy. Depression is more common than we think and of the two, women are at an increased risk of depression

What Triggers Depression?

  • Increasing age
  • Personality disorder
  • Seclusion and social isolation
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Death of a loved one; other emotional reasons
  • Substance abuse (alcoholism and drugs)
  • Family history of depression
  • Previous episodes of depression and anxiety
  • Gender
  • Use of certain medications
  • Side effects of a major illness or surgery or disability

How Would You Know If You Have Depression?

  • In case of depression, the symptoms may not be too obvious and easy to comprehend.
  • You may observe loss of interest in your daily chores, loss of concentration and restlessness.
  • Unnecessary fatigue and lack of energy
  • Sleeping problems such as insomnia or excess of sleep
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Unusual crying
  • Extreme behavior such as irritability, anger or agitation
  • Continuous headaches

What Should You Do In Case Your Symptoms Worsen?

  • In most cases, depression remains unnoticed for a long time. It is usually noticed when the symptoms of depression begin to interfere with your daily chores and habits.
  • Once you suspect of such an unusual behavior, make sure you talk to a close friend and discuss your problem.
  • Bring in changes in your daily routine and see if you still feel the same. If yes, before it gets worse visit a doctor.
  • If talking out does not help, without further delay, consult a psychologist.

What Are The Available Treatment Options?

  • The doctor will ask you questions to understand the underlying cause for depression. Depending on the extent of the problem, he shall suggest you with medications.
  • Psychotherapy and counselling along with a few medicines is the mainstay treatment for depression. The duration for these shall vary from case to case.
  • In case of insomnia, he may also prescribe you with sedatives.
  • In severe cases, electric shocks may also be needed to be given.

Are There Any Natural Remedies For Depression ?

A few practical ways can help you cope with depression effectively:

1. Talk Your Heart Out

Ways to Use:

Connect with your friends and family. It is important to seek social help to fight depression. Seclusion and isolation shall only make it worse.

2. Take Up a Hobby

Ways to Use:

Avoid sitting ideal. Instead, take up a hobby. Depression will rip you off all the energy and will often not allow you to engage yourself in an activity. However, try and fight against it.

3. Get Some Sun

Ways to Use:

Studies suggest that sunlight has a therapeutic effect on those suffering from depression. Sun rays help to boost depressed mood. Take short strolls in the sunlight in the early morning hours.

4. Eat Healthy

Ways to Use:

While fighting depression, make sure you add Vitamin C, Vitamin B and Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. Add nuts, fish, citrus fruits, green veggies to your daily diet.

So, do not fear talking about it, instead make sure you reach out to your friends to avert the changes of severity that may damage you adversely. Remember, like any other mental illness, depression is best treated the sooner it is diagnosed
