Fines For Over Speeding Vehicle
More than 230 million vehicles ply the Indian roads. It varies from heavy, medium-heavy and light vehicles like two wheelers that tread the Indian roads. Each one has different capabilities.
But these are the same over speeding vehicles are the largest killers on road. An over speeding vehicle when it hits the victim with a crushing blow usually results in a grievous injury or possibly even death.
Regulating Speed
The State and Central authorities have tried to tackle and regulate the problem of overspeeding by applying a number of methods. The maximum speed limit has been captioned on the roads. Speed breakers have also been built to regulate speed.
Above all the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 imposes fine for overspeeding vehicle which ideally should act as the biggest deterrent.
Awareness Is Very Poor
In spite of all the road captions on speed limits, the awareness of the dangers of speeding vehicles is still very poor. Speed breakers may temporarily be able to halt speeding vehicles, but once they get over the barrier, the rule breakers fall back to overspeeding again.
Road Accident Statistics
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, in 2015, revealed that 47.9 per cent which means 2,40,463 out of 5,01,423 road accidents take place due to over speeding. Out of this 44.2 per cent which is 64,633 out of 1,46,133 die every year.
Enforcement of Law has to improve
Although penalties for traffic violations are imposed under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 but the actual implementation by the respective authorities on the ground has not been able to match expectations.
It is the duty of the police to catch the violators of the traffic rules and book them to justice. But in reality, corrupt practices overpower punishment of the perpetrator. Thus, the traffic violations and the penalties associated with fines for overspeeding vehicles only exist in the statute book and is not seriously implemented resulting in more road accidents, fatalities and loss in government revenue too.
Recent Changes in Speeding Fine and Penalties
The Motor Vehicles Act has been amended in 2019. The traffic rules and fines have been steeply increased as a deterrent for over speeding. Earlier the over speeding fines were merely limited to Rs. 400 only. But after the amendments to the traffic rules and fines, the following changes have been made:
- The fine for overspeeding vehicle has been raised to Rs. 2000 for light vehicles
- The penalties for medium passenger and goods vehicles will be anywhere between Rs. 2000 to Rs. 4000
- If the same offence is repeated, then the license of the vehicle owner shall be impounded
Looking Ahead
The advent of advanced technology can regulate the issue of speeding to a great extent. The installing of cameras and night vision cameras on the roads and at strategic signal points and intersections will holdout warnings to drivers. This can go a long way in deterring drivers from overspeeding. Make sure you have your car insurance with you to protect from loss.
Also, using digital speed meters which can measure speed can warn people about going over the prescribed speed limit. These methods must be introduced in war footing to limit traffic violations.
