Chennai Traffic Rules
Traffic police in Chennai is quite stringent in ensuring that traffic rules are followed. It does not tolerate any deviation in following the traffic rules. Most drivers tend to follow these traffic rules conscientiously.
Chennai being one of the busiest and largest cities in India has close to 5 million registered vehicles as of 2016. So clearly Chennai has witnessed a huge growth in its vehicle traffic and rise in breach of traffic rules. Chennai Regional Transport Office (RTO) has stated in black and white regulations to take care of the vehicle traffic and traffic rules. Any kind of Chennai traffic violations would attract penalties / fines from the drivers. RTO rules have been laid down clearly. In 2017, the Tamil Nadu government published a comprehensive list of traffic violations and Chennai traffic rules and the penalties / fines that have to be paid by offenders. The Chennai traffic violations are in accordance with the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. Chennai traffic police challan list is comprehensive.

There are other changes Chennai RTO is implementing for traffic hygiene and adherence to Chennai traffic rules. Implementation of these will reduce Chennai traffic violations. This is has been made crystal clear in Chennai traffic police challan list.
- Chennai RTO is taking severe measures against bribing traffic officials. Offering bribe to an official is a crime in itself. This crime has to be eliminated as per RTO rules. One of the measures taken by the Chennai RTO is e-challan. In such a system, the payment has to be made by using credit card / debit card only in accordance to the e-challan. Cash is kept out of the picture. E-challan is also an efficient way of tracking offences. This leads to fewer traffic violations.
- Chennai RTO is highlighting the importance of maintaining recommended speed limit. The same has to be maintained both in city and on highways. Over-speeding will be considered as a traffic violation and will attract a huge fine and could be dangerous for other road users according to RTO rules. This is a part of Chennai traffic police challan list. Violation of this will be against Chennai traffic rules.
- Chennai RTO draws special attention to following road signs. Regular signs like ‘No Parking’, ‘No Right Turn or Left Turn’, ‘No Honking’, etc. must be followed each and every time for your safety and others as per RTO rules. This would lead to Chennai traffic fine. Breach of this will be against Chennai traffic rules.
- Chennai traffic rules include ‘U’ Turn rules are to be adhered to says Chennai RTO. One may take a ‘U’ Turn only when there’s no warning sign and when the road is clear. It is equally important to use the appropriate indicator that one is going to ‘U’ Turn as per RTO rules. Else this will lead to traffic violations.
- Chennai traffic rules suggest respecting and giving way to pedestrians. Pedestrians have the right to walk on zebra and pedestrian crossings say as per RTO rules. Honking is avoidable when they are crossing and if not followed will lead to Chennai traffic violation. Chennai traffic police challan list includes this.
- Chennai traffic rules say that carrying vehicle documents is mandatory. Documents like driving license, vehicle registration certificate or car, vehicle insurance papers and emission or PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate are compulsory to be carried at all points when at the wheel as per RTO rules.
- Chennai RTO highlights the hazard in jumping a red signal. The marked line should be noticed and respected according to RTO rules. One should not cross it as per Chennai traffic rules. One may end up blocking vehicles coming from other directions. This is one of the worst traffic violations and Chennai traffic police challan list covers this.
- No riding on footpaths. Footpaths are for pedestrians exclusively as per RTO rules. Else this will lead to Chennai traffic violation.
- Chennai RTO says that unnecessary honking will not be accepted. Especially in areas such as schools and hospitals, honking is strictly prohibited. Else this will lead to Chennai traffic violation. Noise pollution will be looked at as a crime.
- Chennai RTO says not to overload. It is extremely dangerous to overload your vehicle beyond the prescribed loading. Two-wheeler users should carry a single pillion rider only and not more than two persons as per RTO rules.
- Last but not the least is prohibition of drinking and driving. The most hazardous thing to do is to drive under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances. This is strictly prohibited. This is one of the riskiest Chennai traffic violation.
