Bharti AXA INSURANCE GLOSSARY Subrogation Subrogation occurs when an insurer pays the damages suffered by its client, and then claims the damages in turn from the third-party who is considered at-fault for the damage. For example, if your car is damaged in a road accident – the insurer would pay for the repairs, but seek reimbursement from the third-party at-fault. Another example of subrogation occurs when a health insurance policyholder is injured in an accident and the insurer settles the claim to cover the medical bills. Now, health insurance company can take necessary steps to recover the cost from the at-fault party. All the means and steps that the insured could have taken to recover its losses are now available to the insurer.
