Bharti AXA INSURANCE GLOSSARY Life Expectancy Life expectancy is the average number of years an organism is expected to live based on its time of birth, current age and other demographic factors. Typically, life expectancy is used to refer to the life expectancy at birth. In 2016, the global life expectancy at birth was at 72.0 years (74.2 years for females and 69.8 years for males). It varied from a low of 61.2 years in the African Region to a high of 77.5 years in the European Region. It has been observed that women tend to live longer than men all around the globe. The gap in life expectancy between the sexes has remained around 4.3 to 4.4 years since the year 2000. Global average life expectancy rose by 5.5 years between 2000 and 2016. It is the fastest increase observed since the 1960s. This increase was greatest in the African Region, where life expectancy rose by 10.3 years. This was driven by improvement in child mortality rates, and expanded access to antiretrovirals for the treatment of HIV. Life expectancy in India has seen a study rise since the 1960s, and was recorded to be 68.56 years in 2016. The life expectancy rises as a new born ages to one year of age, and survives the high mortality period. Thereafter, life expectancy starts to fall off with age.
