Bharti AXA INSURANCE GLOSSARY Dividend Dividend A dividend is a part of a publicly-listed company’s earning that is distributed to a class of its shareholders. The quantum of dividend to be distributed is decided upon by the board of directors of the company, and must be approved by the shareholders through their votes. Cash payments are the most popular way of distributing dividends, though it could be distributed in form of shares of a stock or other property as well. Not only companies but mutual funds and exchange traded funds may also distribute dividend. A fixed amount is allotted as dividend per share. This means that the amount received by individual shareholders is in proportion to their shareholding. Most public companies that pay a dividend, follow a fixed schedule. That said, they are free to declare a dividend at any point in time. Such dividends are sometimes called special dividends to distinguish them from the scheduled dividends.
