Bharti AXA INSURANCE GLOSSARY Jurisdiction Jurisdiction refers to the authority that a legal body has to administer justice on a defined field of responsibility. Colloquially, the term is used to mean the geographical area, pecuniary limit and subject matter restriction in which the judge / Authority can adjudicate in any dispute or act. Original jurisdiction refers to the power of a court to hear a case for the first time. Appellate jurisdiction refers to the power of a higher court to review the judgement of a lower court. For example, the Supreme Court of India has exclusive original jurisdiction over all cases between the Government of India and the States of India, and on cases where various states of India are on the different sides. It also has original jurisdiction over cases that require interpretation of the constitution or are related to the denial of fundamental rights. E.g. District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum can give adjudication only on the matters pertaining to deficiency of services or defective goods provided to consumers. They can adjudicate on the dispute arising in the district they have been established and upto limit of INR 20 lacs.
