Most of us want to get healthier. Rarely, though, do we think about maintaining and protecting the health of our lungs. It’s time to change that. According to the data published by GBD Compare 2018, chronic lower respiratory diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are the second and eighth leading cause of death in India, respectively.

Your lungs are just like any other part of your body that age with time. They can lose their strength and become less flexible, which can make it difficult for you to breathe properly. However, if you adopt certain healthy habits in your lifestyle, you can maintain healthy lungs, and this will ensure that your lungs will work optimally even into your senior years. Given below are some ideas that will help you maintain healthy lungs:

Be Aware Of Air Pollution And Do Your Part To Keep The Air Clean

A study conducted by WHO (World Health Organization) in 2018, reports that 13 out of the top 20 most air-polluted cities in the world are from India.  

Pollution from industries, exhaust fumes, and mines can wreak havoc to your lungs. Limit your exposure to mining and industrial areas if possible, and try not to add pollution yourself. There are various things that you can do to reduce pollution and maintain healthy lungs:

  • Walk instead of driving
  • Avoid burning wood and day-to-day trash
  • Using less electricity
  • Plant natural air purifiers at your home, such as a spider plant, dracaena, peace lily, and aloe vera.
  • Avoid using aerosol sprays
  • Ensure that your house has adequate ventilation

Give Your Lungs a Workout

To maintain healthy lungs, you need to give your lungs a regular workout, and there are many fun ways to do it. Given below are some exercises that you can do while improving air capacity of your lungs:

  • Deep breathing: As it will strengthen your lungs and clean out any toxins built up in your lungs.
  • Play a wind instrument: To play instruments such as Flute and Piccolo, you need to use the full capacity of your lungs.
  • Blow up a balloon: Blowing up a few balloons a day will improve your lung’s ability to pump more air for longer and strengthen them.
  • Do yoga: It helps you in taking deep breathing exercises.
  • Sing every day: To be able to sing, your diaphragm needs to be engaged.

Stay Hydrated And Just Laugh

Our lungs consist of 90% of water and need humid air to do their functions properly. When you breathe, water is lost during this process, especially if you are doing exercise or when the wind is hot and dry. It is advisable to drink at least 8 – 10 glasses of water each day to keep your lungs healthy and hydrated.

Also, it would help if you laugh as your abdominal muscles get a workout, which increases the capacity of lungs. Laughter also helps in clearing stale and toxic air from your lungs, allowing fresh air and more oxygen to enter. Make sure to tune into your favourite comedy series daily!

Don’t Smoke And Avoid Second-hand Smoking

According to studies, smoking is one of the most prominent causes of lung diseases such as cancer of lungs and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Cigarettes contain over 4,000 harmful chemicals out of which 50 of them are known to cause cancer. For smokers, quitting is the first step towards healthy lungs. Also, it is advisable to avoid second-hand smoking as it has a similar effect on your lungs as it has on smokers.
