Japan has a huge variety of culinary delights to offer. It has an abundance of regional and seasonal dishes that a foodie may never get tired of eating; the diversity and variety of recipes here are endless. Must-Try Japanese Food
- Sushi: For many people, Sushi is a synonym for Japanese food as it was the first dish from the reason that was exported to the US. Sushi is made up of Japanese rice and vinegar seasoning. A variety of sushi dishes are made here, including maki sushi, nigiri sushi, and nariz sushi.
- Udon: Udon is a noodle variety of Japan that is thick in form, made up of wheat flour and brine water. Udon is mostly served with different kinds of soups like tsuyu or tentsuyu soup, kitsuneudon and chikaraudon.
- Tempura: Tempura is a fried dish consisting of meat or vegetables fried in tempura batter. It can be eaten by itself or with grated daikon or served on rice or soup bowls.
- Yakitori: Yakitori is a dish that consists of small barbequed chicken pieces seasoned with salt or brushed with different sauces, tare, sake alcohol or sugar.
- Ramen: Ramen is a noodle soup; it is one of the most loved dishes of Japan. It is made up of wheat noodles, savoury broth, topped with meat or vegetables like spring onion, bamboo shoots, etc.
- Donburi: Donburi forms lunchtime meals for locals in Japan. It is made up of meat, fish, and vegetables and served over steamed rice in large bowls. The different types of donburi are oyakodon, gyudon, tendon and katsu don.
- Natto; Natto is a traditional Japanese dish made from soya beans that are fermented in a special kind of bacteria that is found in the human gastrointestinal tract. Though it has a slightly pungent smell, natto is loved by many as it holds high nutritional value.
- Oden: Oden is a winter dish made of vegetables and proteins like processed fish, boiled eggs, tofu and yam. These veggies are stewed in a light broth and seasoned with soy sauce and dashi. It serves as a hearty meal on a cold evening in winter.
Japan is heaven for foodies, boasting of abundance in variety and a promise to serve mouthwatering dishes for every meal of the day. A trip to Japan without eating local dishes is an incomplete and unrealized experience.
