Hong Kong Food: How Gourmet Dishes Are Trending In Hong Kong

Food is serious business in Hong Kong. Alongside preserving the culinary heritage of traditional recipes, many of which demonstrate a clear influence of its colonial past, there is experimentation, fusion and a welcoming of various world cuisines in the rich food culture of Hong Kong.

You can experience first-hand the importance of good food in the life of a HongKonger, if you happen to make a trip there. The food trends in Hong Kong are a true reflection of the discerning, dynamic, vibrant and global nature of the city and its people.

Take a look at our food guide to the gourmet dishes that are trending in this fascinating city. From super tasty and cheap street-food to dainty dim sums at the ubiquitous tea houses to fine-dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant, you will be spoilt for choice when it comes to great food in Hong Kong.

Swiss Chicken Wings

In all probability or at least as the story goes, this dish was meant to be called Sweet and not Swiss chicken wings. A Hong Kong speciality, Swiss chicken wings is made by marinating choicest chicken wings in a special mix of Chinese wine, soy sauce, spices and sugar which lends a lovely dark colour and a slightly sticky texture to this lip-smacking delicious creation.

Dan Taat or Egg Tarts

Egg tarts are a sweet delicacy widely enjoyed in Hong Kong. It is a baked preparation of beautifully set smooth and creamy golden yellow custard in a round pastry or butter cookie crust. Apart from local bakeries, you can find egg tarts being served at most cafes or cha chaan tengs and traditional tea houses as they are usually had as a snack with afternoon tea.

Dan taat is claimed by some to be British and by others to be a Portuguese-Chinese influence on Hong Kong’s culinary heritage. Quite popular with the residents of Hong Kong, egg tarts are quickly becoming quite a rage with visitors as well. You should try one local style at a tea house in Hong Kong.

Pineapple Bread

Step into any bakery in Hong Kong and you will get the wonderful aroma of freshly baked pineapple bread. This sweet bun-shaped bread does not actually contain any pineapple. It gets its unusual name because the outer crust resembles the skin of a pineapple. The hot-off-the-oven soft and fluffy pineapple bun is served with a stuffing of a thick layer of cold butter for an amazing mouth-watering sensation. Pineapple bread is a Hong Kong original that you simply must try.

Yung Kee’s Roast Goose

Roast goose is a classic gourmet dish served most famously at Yung Kee’s, an iconic restaurant in Central, Hong Kong. It is a preparation of perfectly roasted goose with a crispy skin and super tender meat, served in thick slices in a special sauce. Originally a Cantonese dish, roast goose is a much savoured delicacy in Hong Kong and its fame is quite wide spread among visitors to the city as well.

Clay Pot Rice

Clay pot rice is a typical Cantonese dish with a smooth creamy texture traditionally cooked and served in a clay pot over a charcoal fire, hence the name. There is a delicate smoky flavour to the steamed white rice which is combined and cooked with a variety of meats like chicken, sausage and pork, along with some greens like shallots and mixed with a special sauce. Clay pot rice is a hearty go-to winter meal and something you definitely should try whilst in Hong Kong.
