German Sausages You Must Try On Your Next Visit To Germany

While thinking about sausages, one can't really ignore Germany, being the pilgrimage destination of hardcore meat lovers. In other words, both the terms aren't really separable, both being so renowned for each other. Besides the car manufacturing capacity of the country, Germany has a great richness in terms of culinary creations spices, the sausage in particular occupying the seat of highest interest. There are more than 40 varieties of sausages in Germany alone and these can be found in almost every street.

 

Top German Sausages one should probably try

 

  • Bratwurst: The simplest kind of sausage created with pork and a natural casing. This is the local favorite, with each and every area having its own variant.
  • Weisswurst: Putting in simple terms, this is the German version of the white sausage. Made with pork and veal, this dish is renowned not only for its taste but also its traditional manner of consumption known as zuzeln[1].
  • Nurnberg Sausage: The most authentic style of sausage as suggested by the greatest of chefs. Basically, these are known for their short and thin appearance.
  • Huhnerwurst: For people willing to tease the taste buds with some kind of spiciness, this is a must for them. This is a spicy chicken sausage, flavoured with varieties of spices and red chilli, which is grilled till the skin gives out a nice snap when you bite into it.
  • Kasekreiner: This is the culinary embodiment of heaven for cheese lovers as the dish basically consists of a large sausage filled with cheese chunks that ooze out once bitten. It has been assigned a nickname, “eitreg”, meaning pus-filled’ in German but we hope that won’t cause you to loose your appetite.
  • Thuringer Rostbratwurst: When there's a sausage for every kind of person, you better be sure that Germany has something for even the health conscious ones. The Thuringer Rostbratwurst is a sausage well-known for its low fat content. It is a sausage unique to the German state, Thuringia and at least 51% of the ingredients must come from this state to qualify it as a Thuringer sausage.
  • Knackwurst: Taking you to the northern part of Germany, this sausage is prepared by stuffing ground pork and fresh garlic into pork casings, preserving the same for a couple of days and then smoking it over woods. This is best served with a bit of mustard and half a slice of toast.
  • Fleischwurst: Another sausage flavoured with garlic, it is a sausage that comes in a horseshoe shaped ring, the ends knotted together with a string.
  • Bierwurst: Unlike its name, the sausage does not contain any kind of beer or any other alcoholic content. Rather, it can be served with beer, and is a garlicky sausage seasoned with black peppercorns, paprika and mustard seeds.
  • Currywurst: As the name suggests, it is served with curry and has been re-imagined across the whole country, giving rise to very unique variants. It comes in varying tastes of tangy, sweet and salty.
