The learning license is the stepping stone to a young man or woman’s 4-wheeler or 2-wheeler dream. Once a person gets a learning license, he or she can use it across the country until it expires.

There is a lot of advice out in the internet on how to get a 2-wheeler or 4-wheeler learning. However, very little has been said about the learning license age conditions to be met.

Learning license age for various vehicle types:

Two wheelers: The minimum age for a learning license for a two-wheeler whose capacity is below 50cc is 16 years of age. However, in today’s times 50cc scooters are few and far between. Hence, it is better to wait to get the two-wheeler above 50cc license.

Two wheelers above 50cc capacity: The minimum age for getting a two-wheeler above 50cc is 18 years of age. This includes all recent launches of Scooty and Active.

Car learning license: Car learning license is given to anyone who is above 18 years of age. He or she should also pass the mental and physical fitness requirements for the same.

Light motor vehicle license for transport use: Light motor vehicle covers vehicles like autorickshaws, delivery vans, etc. The minimum age for driving a transport vehicle is 18 years of age. He or she should have also finished education till 8th standard.

Light motor vehicle-Non-Transport (LMV-NT): LMV-NT is a license category in India. Cars, jeeps, small vans for personal purposes but not used for commercial purposes.

Light motor vehicle license for transport use: Light motor vehicles such as mini buses, tempos, delivery trucks. Transport vehicle license is issued to a person who has completed 20 years of age.

Heavy motor vehicle license: The heavy motor vehicle license covers license necessary to drive trucks, lorries and other such vehicles It is issued to anyone who is 20 years of age and has finished schooling till 8th standard.

HPMV (Heavy Passenger Motor Vehicle): The heavy passenger motor vehicle learners license covers buses, mini buses etc. It is issued to anyone who is 20 years of age and has finished schooling till 8th standard.

 

TRAILER — A person holding a heavy vehicle driving licence can only apply for heavy trailer licence. A person applying for such a license needs to be above 18 years of age. In some states, the age requirement is 20 years. The candidates should have also passed 8th standard schooling.

Is there an age limit to getting a learning license?

Right now, there is no age limit to getting a 4-wheeler learner’s license in India. 75-year old will not get a license. The government has also asked 50-year olds to go for a visual checkup before they embark on their journey to get a learning license. They also need to renew their license every 5 years. This rule has come into force because the older a person gets, the weaker are his sensory organs (in most cases).

Which are the states where learning license age for transport vehicles is 20 years?

Most states demand that the applicant should be 20 years of age. Few states are exempt from this clause and the candidates can get their licenses at 18 years of age.

What documents can be used as age proof for learner’s license?

Any of the following documents can be used as age proof for a learner’s license.

  • Life insurance policy
  • Ration Card.
  • Voter ID card.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Passport

 

What is the penalty if a minor is found behind the wheel?

If your minor kid or your minor friend is found driving with proper documentation, then the owner of the vehicle can face serious charges. The registration of the vehicle may be cancelled for one year.  And Once the said period is over then a fresh application should be submitted for the registration of the vehicle.

As per a new section inserted 199A and 199B, the owner can be fined as much as Rs25000 and face imprisonment upto 3 years.

The minor child will also not be able ot get his or her license till the age of 25. Hence, make sure you give your car only to people who have proper documents.

 

Can a 16-year-old drive an Activa?

No, a 16- year old cannot drive an Activa as an Activas engine capacity is between 109.2cc to 124.9cc. A 16- year old can obtain a learning license for a 50cc engine vehicle.

Is it necessary to be 16 or 18 years of age to get a learner’s license in any country across the world?

No, it is not a universal eligibility limit. In Canada, for example, one can get a license at age 16 irrespective of the type of vehicle.
