Winter Driving Safety Tips

Winter Driving Safety Tips

Do you live in the part of the country that receives snow, ice, and fog-like conditions during the winter season? Effective planning and maintenance of your vehicle along with proper car insurance renewal are important tasks year-round – but, you need to be extra cautious especially when the winter season is around the corner. If you wish to ensure the topmost level of security for your vehicle, here are some winter driving safety tips for your car and your loved ones:

  • Preparing Your Vehicle: Before you make the go, it is important to prepare your vehicle in advance to bear the winter season. Start  the season right by ensuring that your vehicle is in  an optimal condition:
  1. Get your car serviced by visiting a mechanic for its tuning-up and other maintenance services.
  2. Get your car checked for any leaks, poorly worn hoses, and other needed parts, replacements, and repairs.
  • Know Your Car: Every car comes with different technical specifications that are handled   differently. This fact stands particularly true when you are driving on snowy, wet, or icy roads. As the winters approach, take time to understand your car well to ensure its seamless running:
  1. Before driving your car, get rid of the snow, dirt, or ice from the windows, headlights, forward sensors, a backup camera, and other sensors around your vehicle.
  2. When your area is snowing, try sharpening your winter driving skills and knowing how your vehicle handles the snow in extreme climates.  Look through the manual of your car to familiarize yourself with its specific features like electronic stability controls, anti-lock brakes, and others.
  3. For hybrid or electric vehicles, try to minimize the draining on the car’s battery.
  4. If you are renting a car, try to become familiar with the particular car before driving it on the main road. Review the owner’s manual such that you are prepared for any driving situation that may arise.
  • Go Over the Safety Checklist of Your Vehicle: Before hitting off on the roads, it is important to browse through the safety checklist of your vehicle. Here are some pointers to consider:
  1. Battery: As the temperature drops, the battery power of your car drops simultaneously. For diesel & gasoline engines, it would take more battery power to start your car in the cold weather. For electric vehicles, the driving range is reduced when the battery becomes cold.
    1. Take your car to the mechanic to get its battery checked for ensuring sufficient amperage, voltage, and reserve capacity.
    2. Get the belts and charging systems inspected.
    3. Replace the battery and ensure required system repairs
  2. Lights: While driving in regions experiencing heavy fog or snowfall, make sure that the lights of your car are in their working order. Check the brake lights, headlights, emergency flashers, interiors lights, and turn signals.
  3. Cooling System: Ensure that the cooling system of your vehicle is in proper working condition. Make sure that your car has enough coolant and the coolant is meeting the manufacturer’s specifications. Drain & replace the coolant in your car as suggested by the manufacturer.
  4. Wipers & Defrosters: Safer winter driving relies on achieving the best possible visibility. Make sure that the windshield wipers are working and are in proper condition. You can also think about installing & using heavy-duty winter wipers if you live in an area that experiences heavy snowfall.
  • In Emergency Situations: In case you get stuck during driving in the winter conditions, ensure that you have proper emergency measures. Getting your proper car insurance online can help a lot. Leading car insurers like Bharti AXA offers 24/7 roadside assistance in cases of emergency situations.

Ensure the safest winter driving!
