Why Should You Get A Good Health Insurance Policy

Few people in India bother about health insurance. This is evident from the woeful non-life penetration rate of less than 1% in India as compared to almost 4% in the US. Most tend to see Health Insurance as a tool to save taxes (where one can reduce taxable income by up to INR 60,000) or else only rely on insurance policies offered by their employers which often come with multiple caveats and have low covers.

Here are a few reasons why it is absolutely important for you to have your own health insurance policy.

• High Health Care Costs

In metros, a heart or kidney ailment requiring hospitalization for a few days could easily set you backby a few lakhs. As per estimates, this cost is only expected to get higher as medical inflation (15-20%) outpaces regular inflation (6-7%).

Thus, without health insurance, an unforeseen medical emergency could easily deplete your savings or in the worst-case cause indebtedness.

Health Insurancehelps you by preventing a medical emergency from turning into a financial emergency.

Health Care Costs are also dependent on the quality of service one desires. For example – you may wish to be treated in a private room which would result in higher Room Rent per day.

One must have a health insurance policy with an adequate sum assured based on the above considerations

• Ability to cover your entire family

Insurance companies allow you to extend the health insurance coverage to your near and dear ones by buying a family floater plan. While this will increase your premium, it is cheaper than buying individual plans for each family member.

• Cashless Treatment

Insurance companies have tie-ups with thousands of hospitals across the country for cashless treatment. Under this mechanism, the insurance company directly pays the hospital for your treatment. Thus, you are saved from the hassle of arranging funds to pay for bills and then getting the same reimbursed from the insurer. Before buying insurance, just make sure that preferred hospitals in your vicinity are empanelled with your insurer for cashless payment.

• Coverage of pre and post hospitalization expenses

Health insurance is not just limited to hospitalization expenses. Other expenses such as diagnostic tests, OPD charges, maternity costs, physiotherapy costs, dietary make up for a substantial chunk of medical costs. While some of these costs could be covered under the existing policy, you might have to buy additional riders for other costs such as Maternity Costs.

• No Claim Bonus

Health Insurance premiums go up with age as risk factors increase. However, policyholders can reduce their premium outgoes through a No Claim Bonus in case they have not made any claims in the past. Effectively, you could think of this as a reward for maintaining good health. Always check the extent to which no claim bonus can be applied. For example – Certain Insurance policies offered by Bharti AXA offer a No Claim Bonus of up to 100% of the sum insured.

The massive outflow of money due to a medical emergency is one of the leading reasons for financial ruin. By purchasing health insurance early, you would ensure that your family and you are adequately protected against adversities.
