When To Change Engine Oil For Your Car/Bikes?

With the usage of any vehicle, be it a car or a bike, the performance eventually goes down after a long period of use. The parts of a vehicle need to be properly lubricated and well maintained for it to function smoothly and efficiently. Having a good quality of engine oil is also necessary or else it can cause blockages in the engine flow.

Types of Engine Oil and their Life

Choosing the right kind of engine oil depends on many factors. The age of the engine, the driving habits, quality of roads or even the weather conditions of the area influence the type of engine oil to be used. Generally, there are four types of engine oil available in the market. They are

●     Full Synthetic Motor Oil

Fully synthetic motor oil is the best quality engine oil available in the market. It gives out the best performance and high levels of lubrication. Though costly, fully synthetic oil reduces the engine’s drag and gives the car a few extra horsepowers of energy. Mechanics recommend that fully synthetic oil must be changed for every 5000 miles for good engine performance. Though it can last up to 10,000 to 12,000 miles easily.

●     Synthetic Blend Motor Oil

Coming to the Synthetic Blend, as the name suggests, it is a mixture of synthetic motor oil and conventional motor oil. It provides benefits of the fully synthetic oil up to a certain level. This oil is made for customers who want to get the best of both worlds and save some money as well. This type of oil needs to be changed every 5,000-7,500 miles

●     Conventional Motor Oil

The classical motor oil is still in use for the late model cars and older version engines. It is easily affordable and also easy to find. There are still a lot of vehicles running on old drivers that are not compatible with synthetic motor oil. The conventional oil needs to be changed for every 3,000-5,000 miles cycle for good performance

●     High Mileage Motor Oil

This type of motor oil is almost a synthetic blend with an additional feature that they include seal conditioners. These seal conditioners prevent seal degradation on the engines and good quality high mileage oils can give up to a mileage of around 75,000 miles as well.

Recommended Distance To Change Oil

In the case of bikes, for riders who prefer fully synthetic oil, it is advisable that the engine oil is changed after 7000 to 10,000 miles which in other words is 11,000 to 15,000 km. But the range drops when it comes to synthetic blends as they are a bit inferior to fully synthetic oil. The average mileage to change in the case of semi-synthetic oil is 5,000 to 6,000 miles, which in kilometers is 8000 to 9500 km.

While coming to cars, the range varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but generally, the 5000-mile mark is considered a good option for an oil change. Though for the best and ultimate performance, it is advised to change the engine oil every 3000 miles. However, cars can withstand mileage of up to 10,000 to 12,000 as well.

Other Signs to Change Oil

Though generally, we tend to look at the mileage before changing the engine oil, it could be necessary sometimes to change the oil before the vehicle hits the average mileage mark. Here are some indications to look at when there might be a need to change the engine oil :

●     The motor oil has turned black due to excessive use and heat production of the engine.

●     Engine creating excess noise or causing jumps because of blockages in the engine.

●     Using the right ratio of oils and antifreeze in case of colder temperatures.

●     Too thick or too low viscosity in the oil.

While going deeper into the classifications of oil, it can be found that there are many variants like the 5W-20, 5W-30 or 10W-30. There are many more variants, and all of these blends vary in the ratio of oil additives they hold. Oil additives include things like detergents, dispersants, friction modifiers, pour point depressants, antioxidants, and foam inhibitors. The difference in the ratio of these additives brings out the different motor oil variants. So figure out and use the best motor oil suitable to your vehicle and needs.
