The Anti-Lock Braking System, or ABS, has become a vital cornerstone of modern vehicle safety systems. Right from the time the carriage was built, brakes have been important. With the advent of motorized vehicles came an increase in speed, and the greater need to stop from that speed. So bigger brakes came about. In older vehicles without ABS, pumping the brake pedal and holding it down almost always causes the wheels to “lock-up” and lose their grip which leads to skidding. This is where the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) comes in. It prevents the wheels from locking up and helps them maintain grip with the road below.
A comprehensive report has been launched on the global automotive ABS market by Market Research Future (MRFR). MRFR has projected that the ABS market will reach $44.5 billion by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 7.1% from 2017-2024.
ABS is part of an automobile safety system, commonly known as electronic stability control, which monitors wheels under heavy braking. A sensor monitors the spinning of the wheel. When you apply the brakes, your vehicle’s onboard computer is looking to see if one of the wheels is turning slower than the others, indicating that it is about to lock up. If the sensor detects that the wheel has locked even for a millisecond, it releases brake pressure only for a moment and then reapplies it when the speed matches the other wheels. This means the system will brake just enough to not lock the wheels. With ABS, you get better stability over a car while braking. When the system is active you will feel pulsing in the brake pedal which comes from the rapid opening and closing of valves. This system provides better stability and control to the driver rather than bringing the car to stop.
What do you do when the road is slippery and you have to suddenly apply the brakes of your car? Without an ABS, the wheels of your car will skid, which will result in lesser steering control and the consequences of that can be deadly. In fact, on slippery surfaces, even a professional driver would struggle to bring the vehicle to halt efficiently without ABS technology. That is why ABS is considered as an effective safety feature :
No driver can brake as fast and provide a faster response to situations compared to ABS technology. It is no exaggeration to say that ABS can be life-saving. Not having ABS results in a decrease in the efficiency of tires. The conventional brakes tend to have a greater stopping distance than a car with the ABS. Having a conventional brake system instead of an ABS does not give us a possibility of a traction control system, where new technology helps ensure that each wheel has traction on the road. A car having an ABS cannot slip or skid even on snow because of the perfect pressure applied on each tire by the ABS.
