What Happens if Buy Health Insurance at 45 Years?

Buying a Health Insurance at 45 Years

It is interesting to note that as per Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) rules and regulations, the entry age to apply for insurance is up to 65 years. This means that it is mandatory for insurers to provide health insurance for an individual in the age bracket of 40 – 65 years. Just because the individual is applying relatively late for an insurance policy, does not mean the insurance provider can  turn down such a request. Also, lifetime renewability clause applies to such policies. At the age of 65 years, an individual may feel the need to have a health insurance of their own considering the fact that he has secured his family’s future first for all these years.

Below are a few things that you should keep in mind before purchasing a health insurance policy.  Note that many insurance companies have the provision of ‘buy health insurance online — saving your time, effort and money.

  • Coverage
Make a list of your needs and the reasons as to  why you are wanting to buy a medical insurance in the first place. Weigh the pros and cons to see how the insurance policy can prove to be cost effective for you.
  • Premium
Premium to be paid on the health insurance increases as you age. The term used to define this is ‘premium loading’ and depends on your age and health condition.
  • Medical Tests
Majority of the insurance companies do not ask the applicants (below 45 years) to take medical tests. Therefore, check for this condition beforehand with the insurance company.
  • Exclusions
Injuries due to strike, protest and commotion, dental services, cosmetic surgery, joint replacement surgery, HIV and related diseases, health issues due to excessive drug or alcohol abuse are some of the conditions that are not included in the health insurance. Therefore, it is imperative you thoroughly go through all that is included and excluded in your health insurance plan.
  • Tax
Under section 80D of the Indian Income Tax Act 1961, you can avail the tax benefits on your health insurance plan.

Health is a serious subject and you have every right to insure yourself for the exorbitant medical care hospitalization expenses.  40 or even anything after that is not late at all to apply for a health insurance plan. So, go right ahead and get one today!
