What are the Documents Required for Passport?


When you are enrolling for the passport for the first time, we are almost clueless about the documents required for passport. Along with the happiness and relaxation it brings, it is also required to have a safe trip.

Most basic documents required for applying for a passport are:

  1. Birth Certificate or any other Proof of Birth.
  2. Photo Identity proof
  3. Residence proof
  4. Proof of Nationality
  5. Proof of Non-ECR

1. Proof of Residence

  1. Landline or Post-paid phone Bill.
  2. Water Bill.
  3. Electricity Bill.
  4. Order of Income Tax Assessment.
  5. Voter Identity Card.
  6. Proof of Gas Connection.
  7. Spouse’s Passport Copy.
  8. For minors, Parent’s Passport Copy.
  9. Aadhaar Card.
  10. Rent Agreement.
  11. Photo Passbook of a bank account that is already running.

2. Proof of Identity

  1. The birth certificate that is issued by the Registrar of Births. Any authority that has been empowered under Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969.
  2. Matriculation Certificate/Leaving Certificate/Transfer Certificate which was issued by the school.
  3. Aadhaar Card.
  4. Election Photo Identity Card that is issued by the Election Commission of India.
  5. PAN Card issued by Income Tax Department of India.
  6. Driving Licence which is issued by the transport department of India.
  7. Policy Bond issued by Life Insurance Corporation that comes with the Date of Birth of the Policy Holder.

3. List of Documents for Non-ECR Category

ECR means Emigration Check Required and ECNR means Emigration Check Not Required. For the proof of Non-ECR Category, you may require documents mentioned below:

  1. Higher Educational Pass Certificate

How to Apply for the Passport?

Below mentioned are the steps to follow for applying for the passport.

  1. Register online from the Passport Seva website.
  2. Login to the Portal.
  3. Apply for the new/renewal of passport.
  4. Download/fill the form from the website and upload it back on the website.
  5. Submit the application.
  6. Schedule the Appointment after paying the amount asked.
  7. Appointment Confirmation with all the necessary details at the passport office.
  8. Visit the office on the day of appointment with the printed copy of appointment confirmation receipt.
  9. Give the biometrics, get the documents verified, collect acknowledgement. The whole process will take 2 to 4 hours.
  10. Once the police verification is done, you will receive your passport.
