Tips To Stay Healthy Even When You Grow Old

We are all busy and active people. We work, eat, enjoy and generally live a healthy life. Still, come old age, and we face many health concerns. Some of these are minor problems, while others are major ones. Today, we will try and go deeper into how is it that we can be healthy, even in our senior years.

 

While we age, there are a lot of changes taking place in us, physically and mentally. It is important to understand these changes and take the necessary steps to stay healthy. The tips mentioned below should help.

 

Eat Well

Eating well is important, no matter at which stage you are. But, it is all the more important in old age. You might not know but many life-threatening diseases such as obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes can be prevented or controlled with proper diet and exercise.

 

Stay Socially Active

Just as you need exercise to keep us physically fit, being socially active keeps the mind fit. The more you interact with others, the more we explore. The brain is a very adaptive organ and you can keep it occupied and healthy by being socially active. Being socially active will also enable you to be physically active in your community. This, in turn, will keep most of the ailments at bay.

Once you cross the age of 50, the body needs more of certain types of supplements. It might also need a higher quantity of certain vitamins and minerals. Some of these include:

Exercise

A study carried out in Sweden has discovered that all factors aside, exercise alone is a major contributor to longevity. Exercise not only keeps you fit and healthy but also improves your sleep and mental health. In your senior years, not every exercise might be feasible so it is important to understand the limitations of your body. Some tips include:

 

Start slow and gradually increase your intensity.

Find an activity you enjoy. This way, it will not feel like a task.

Walking is a wonderful way to stay fit. Try that.

Exercise with either a group or a family member or a friend. This way, you can keep each other motivated.

 

Quit Smoking

Tobacco is harmful to your health. The sooner you realize this, the longer you will live. Cigarettes, tobacco and other products which have nicotine are a major cause of oral cancers, gum diseases and many more. Your body is capable of adapting and it starts healing within just 20 minutes of your last smoke. There are many support groups for assistance as well.

 

Yoga

It is a well-known fact that yoga improves health and leads to a better, fuller life.

 

Sleep

As you age, one of the common problems is insomnia. Have a schedule and try to stick to it. Sleep early and wake up early. Try the following things:

 

Avoid social media, laptops, TV late at night.

Avoid caffeine in the evening.

If you sleep during the day, keep it short.

 

The above-mentioned tips, along with a positive mindset will help you in healthy ageing.
