Tips For Driving In Australia

Just like in India, the steering wheel is on the right-hand side of the car in Australia. So, there is not going to be much difficulty when it comes to handling the steering wheel. However, the rules are different and stricter than in India. A small mistake can get you slapped for a huge fine. So, before you embark on your journey to Australia, here are a few driving tips that you must learn by heart to have a memorable journey.

  • Just like in any other foreign country, to drive around in Australia, you need an international driver’s permit. Carry your Indian license as well.
  • Ask locals and check for signage when driving around in different areas to know the speed limit. 50km per hour is the speed limit in built-up areas while that in the Northern Territory is 60km per hour.
  • Drivers and all passengers must always wear seatbelts.
  • Drinking and driving is a punishable offense across Australia. 0.05% is the maximum blood alcohol level permitted.
  • If you are driving around with a child under the age of 18, do not smoke as it is illegal.
  • Using a handheld mobile phone for taking calls, texting, browsing the internet, and for playing games is a punishable offense.
  • Take the ‘No Standing,’ ‘No Stopping,’ and ‘No Parking’ signs seriously to avoid paying huge fines.
  • Dial 000 to gain access to ambulance, fire services, police.
  • Do not enter in an area that says, ‘Bus Zone’ or ‘Taxi Zone.’
  • Police patrolling is vigilant in Australia, and anything that you do against the law will certainly be caught either on camera or by the police officials.
  • Be vigilant of signs that warn you about wildlife crossing. You don’t want to get into trouble by accidentally hitting a koala or maybe a kangaroo.

Keep these tips handy when driving around Australia. When you know the rules, no one can stop you from having fun with your loved ones around. Also, with your decision to drive around in Australia, be sure of keeping yourself safeguarded with Australia travel insurance. Travel insurance protects you from any misfortune event in abroad.

When in Australia, don’t forget to party like a local by exploring the happening nightlife.
