Things You Shouldn't Do If You Ever Meet With A Car Accident

When you are in the middle of a car accident, you would be under tremendous pressure. The high stress could affect your judgements, and you may commit further mistakes that worsen the situation. It is important to be aware of the absolute no-no’s beforehand and know what you should never do when in a car accident.

Leave The Scene

Let us say you were involved in a minor accident. You look around and realize nobody is injured. The damage to the other car is minimal as well. So, you could now safely be on your way – right?

Wrong! Hit and run is an offense. Regardless of how minor the accident looks – you should wait for the law enforcement to arrive. If you don’t, the third-party could press charges.

Ignore Calling The Police

Let us say you reach an agreement with the other party to settle the damages and not get the police involved. This will get back to bite you in case you need your insurer to pay for some of the Own Damage – you will need a FIR to file the claim! Further, how do you even know that the person you were involved in with an accident did not have any pending warrants against him? It is always better to inform the law enforcement about the accident, even if you do not need them to take any particular action.

Lose Your Temper

An accident is never pleasant. But, it is important to keep your emotions under check when dealing with the aftermath – especially when talking to the other driver. Do not start placing the blame on the other party the moment you get out of your car. Start by first enquiring about their well-being and ensuring that no one needs medical attention. Further, you need to be in a good frame of mind to document the circumstances of the accident. That said, do not say that it was your fault either. You do not want to be in a legal jam because of an emotional admission of guilt.

Neglect The Aftermath

Even if it was a small accident, make sure you get yourself medically examined for any injuries, Remember not all injuries are apparent in nature – internal bleeding could be as dangerous as blood loss or fractured bones. It is a good idea to get your vehicle overhauled as well. If you need to claim insurance, make sure to inform your insurer at the earliest possible.

Neglect Documentation

You should get a copy of the policy report of the accident/ FIR as needed. You should also note down the other party’s details including her insurance details. Owning a comprehensive car insurance policy turns out to be beneficial in such a situation. Make sure to note down the circumstances of the accident to ensure that you don’t miss any crucial detail later.
