Things To Avoid While Traveling To Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is a rich and fascinating tourist destination. It is a blend of starkly beautiful ancient sights, natural wonders and dazzling luxury of 21st century modern living. There is so much to explore in Saudi Arabia.

However anyone travelling to Saudi must note that the country has pretty strict social norms and etiquettes that a tourist is expected to follow. Today Saudi Arabia is more tourist-friendly as many of the stringent rules and regulations have been relaxed in the last few years.

But it is important that you are aware of the do’s and don’ts and act accordingly. As the saying goes, “when in Rome do as the Romans do”!

Respecting your host country’s culture and abiding by their customs and traditions will ensure you stay safe and have an enjoyable trip.

Here is a travel guide to some of the things you should avoid while in Saudi Arabia.

Stay Away From Alcohol

This is one vacation where you will have to make do without a relaxing glass of wine or your favourite cocktail. Alcohol consumption is prohibited in the entire country. It doesn’t matter whether you stay in a 5-star hotel, at a resort or in any other type of accommodation. Alcohol is totally off limits in Saudi Arabia. Oh and by the way, you also don’t want to be caught carrying any bottles of your tipple of choice.

Be Restrained In Your Emotions

No matter how romantic the setting, the weather or the occasion, posing lovingly with your spouse, boyfriend or girlfriend in public can land you in serious trouble. Saudi Arabia is a conservative society and Saudis simply do not approve of any public shows of affection. So do remember to behave modestly and avoid displaying your emotions at public places.

Do Not Violate The Dress Code

This one applies specifically to women tourists. It is mandatory for all women whether locals or tourists to wear an ‘abaya’ or full-length black robe. You need not cover your head and are free to wear whatever outfit you like as long as you wear the robe over it. When out in public women must always be seen dressed in the ‘abaya’.

Refrain From Being A Shutterbug

You are likely to be fined or could find yourself in jail for photographing any of these.

  • Government Buildings
  • Mosques
  • Local, Saudi Women
  • Palaces
  • Military Establishments

Basically Saudis are quite guarded about their country and taking photographs can be seen as suspicious. So use your best judgement and be discreet instead of going click click at every photo-op.

Well these are some of things to stay away from if you intend to travel to Saudi Arabia. But something you must do while on a vacation in Saudi Arabia is to try some traditional Saudi dishes.

And you should definitely find out about the Saudi Visa application process, allow enough time to apply, plan your trip and get travel insurance. You can check out international travel insurance policies online and buy one that meets your requirements. For international travel, an individual or family plan will usually give you the best cover.
