Solo Trip To New Zealand

53

There is something so very liberating about solo travel that everyone should try it at least once. Travelling and exploring the world on your own is a great way to build life skills, boost self confidence and overcome a lot of your fears and inhibitions.

In this edition of our solo travel guides we focus on New Zealand. Tucked away in the far south east corner of the globe, the two islands that make up New Zealand are a treasure trove of amazing natural wonders from active geysers and volcanoes to fjords, glacier lakes, virgin forests, long stretches of sandy beaches and rich flora and fauna. The country also has culturally diverse and advanced cities such as Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton and the capital Wellington.

The compact size of New Zealand makes it a little less daunting to explore on your own as compared to bigger countries. Plus it really helps that the people are easy going, quite social and more than willing to lend a helping hand.

Whether you are doing a solo trip for the first time or are a seasoned solo traveller, you are sure to find that a solo trip to the land of the Kiwis is a fascinating adventure of a lifetime.

Destinations in New Zealand for Solo Travellers

Auckland

Auckland is the largest, busiest and most populated city in New Zealand with urban sophistication and a great multi-cultural vibe, which makes it the perfect starting point for a solo traveller to feel comfortable in New Zealand.

For accommodation you can choose from affordable, clean and spacious backpacker hostels which offer dorm-style stay as well as private rooms. Many of them even organise backpacker tours which is a great way to see the country and meet fellow travellers so do check about that. Another good option is a homestay that will give you an opportunity to know your Kiwi host and get some local insights and tips. If you are not travelling on a budget, hotels are always available in a wide range of options.

Among the interesting things to do in Auckland is to spend time at the harbour waterfront which is a buzzing outdoor entertainment area in the summers with live performances. Follow a hiking trail, stroll around the parks, visit wineries, art galleries and shops, sip your coffee at the lovely cafes, get to the top of the 328 metre Sky Tower for unmatched views of Auckland and once the sun goes down you may like to check out the city’s swish rooftop bars that are sure to liven up your spirits. Brew on Quay, La Zeppa and The Glass Goose are some of the most popular rooftop bars in Auckland.

North Island

As a traveller, the main attraction of New Zealand is its jaw-dropping scenic beauty, amazing natural phenomenon and adrenaline-pumping outdoor adventure sports. To explore North Island beyond Auckland, inter-city buses are the most convenient way to get around New Zealand and for a solo traveller they certainly make your mobility easy.

Make a trip to Rotorua famous for its geothermal hot springs in vivid colour and formation. Try zorbing, white water rafting, kayaking and paddle boarding at Lake Rotoiti. Then there are the glowworm lit Waitomo caves just south of Auckland that is something quite special that you should see.

Stay alert and safe as you enjoy your solo adventures in New Zealand. Above all don’t forget to get Travel Insurance for New Zealand. It should be part of trip planning and preparedness because your travel insurance policy will act as your most important backup to cover you in case of any mishap or unforeseen emergency. Buying travel insurance is absolutely essential to secure your solo trip to New Zealand so make sure you don’t leave home without it.
