Solo Trip To Japan

Travelling and exploring the world on your own can bring about a huge transformation in one’s personality as it helps to improve self confidence, build and sharpen life skills and overcome a lot of fears and inhibitions. There is something so extremely liberating and rewarding about solo travel that everyone should try it at least once.

In this edition of our solo travel guides we focus on the Land of the Rising Sun, Japan. Japan holds much fascination and charm for visitors from around the world. Whether you are a solo travel novice or a seasoned solo traveller with a passport choc-a-bloc with country stampings on every page, you are sure to find that a solo trip to Japan is an enthralling once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tips for Solo Travel in Japan

  • Being well informed about your destination is the most vital preparation that you should do as a solo traveller. Research and read up extensively on Japan and Japanese culture and customs before you travel there.
  • Kyoto, Tokyo, Osaka, Okinawa and Hokkaido are some of the most interesting places to visit in Japan.
  • Best time to visit Japan is during spring or fall when the weather is most pleasant.
  • If you are staying at a hostel, check if the place can organise guided day tours within the city and to nearby attractions. This is also a good way to meet other like-minded fellow solo travellers.
  • Whenever you come across fellow travellers, don’t hesitate to strike up a conversation and exchange travel notes about Japan. Apart from making new friends the first-hand information you get from them can prove very useful in your travels within Japan since the local Japanese tend not to be too social.
  • Japan has one of the lowest crime rates in the world which makes it a perfectly safe destination for solo travellers, in particular women. Even so one must always remain alert and aware of one’s surroundings and guard your belongings when travelling solo. After all there is no such thing as being too careful.
  • While on one hand the country is very advanced, Japanese society is typically quite conservative and this is also reflected in the way men and women dress. While you may not experience it so much in bigger cities like Tokyo, it is advisable for solo women travellers to dress modestly while exploring Japan.

Solo Accommodation in Japan

For a uniquely Japanese cultural experience we suggest you opt to stay at a ryokan which is a Japanese-style inn, usually found in onsens or hot spring resorts. Not quite a homestay, a ryokan recreates an authentic Japanese way of living in terms of futon beds, tatami or traditional straw mat flooring and serve authentic Japanese cuisine, inclusive of breakfast and an elaborate dinner. Note that a ryokan stay is not cheap so you may like to check in just for a one-stay to get the experience.

Of course the tried and tested familiar accommodation types such as budget hotels and hostels abound that can offer a comfortable stay for solo travellers. Check them out online and make advance reservations as popular places tend to get booked quite fast during the tourist season.

Get hold of a Japan travel guide to find out more about the country and to plan your vacation. Enjoy your solo adventures in Japan but before you embark on your trip remember to get travel insurance for Japan. While Japan is one of the safest countries that you will ever visit, it is best not to take any unnecessary travel risks, especially when doing a solo trip. Your travel insurance policy will act as your most important backup to cover you in case of any mishap or an unforeseen medical emergency. Buying travel insurance is absolutely essential to secure your solo trip to Japan so make sure you don’t leave home without it.

While in Japan we recommend trying some of the delicious street food at the yatai stalls where you can sample the best of traditional Japanese dishes at very affordable prices.
