Must Follow Safety Tips When Riding A Two-Wheeler In A City

Two-wheelers are one of the most preferred means of transport in India. They are quick in the cities and offer practical transportation from point A to B. However, the traffic situation, congestion on roads and road manners make two-wheelers among the most unsafe modes of transportation.

If you own a two-wheeler, safety is the first thing that should concern you. It is essential to follow every safety precaution when you’re riding a two-wheeler. The tips mentioned below are to be followed for your safety. Take a look!

1. Wear Protective Gear

No matter the distance you’re riding for, it’s necessary to wear protective gear. Wearing a helmet is mandatory by law, and every two-wheeler rider should comply with the norms. Remember, the helmet is a necessity and no trip – no matter how short, is worth your life. So, wear a helmet. Even if you’re riding as a pillion, make sure to always wear a helmet.

Make sure to invest in an excellent helmet that complies with the BIS standards as per the legal norms.

2. Maintain a Safe Distance

When riding a two-wheeler, always maintain adequate distance from the vehicle that’s ahead of you. It helps in situations when there is a sudden need for braking as you will have more time to react. If you’re riding closely to any vehicle ahead of you, a mishap where sudden braking is required can end up into a crash. Maintain a 2-4 second following distance, but don’t slow down too much, so it causes inconvenience to the traffic flow.

Always remain in control of the situation. Avoid riding too close to trucks or buses because they have more blind spots and are more likely not to know your presence on the road. You can wear brighter colours when riding a two-wheeler to be more visible to others. Some armour jackets and boots come with reflective strips that help others notice two-wheelers easily, especially during the night.

3. Follow Traffic Rules

Follow traffic rules on the road and set an example for those who don’t. The primary traffic rules apply within city limits too. Always be attentive of your immediate surroundings and use common sense on the road.

Never go above the speed limit, stick to your lane, use turn indicators, stop before the zebra crossing during red lights and always be sane on the road. Also, remember to keep your cool while riding.

4. Avoid Riding During Bad Weather

Bad weather is a recipe for disaster when riding a two-wheeler in India. During the monsoon, it becomes especially more dangerous since most of the roads are clogged and muddy, making it highly risky to ride a two-wheeler.

However, if you need to ride a two-wheeler during monsoon, make sure to abide by all rules and be extra vigilant while riding.

5. Maintain Your Two-Wheeler in Top Shape

Always maintain your two-wheeler in top shape. It will protect you from mishaps occurring because of the poor condition of your two-wheeler.

Regularly lube your bike’s chain, make sure all electricals including headlight and taillights are working.

Another thing to keep in mind is braking performance. Change brake pads whenever the brake bite starts to lose its effectiveness. Tyres should also be regularly changed. Look for faded tread patterns and see if your two-wheeler is beginning to lose its grip on turns. The most important aspect of maintenance is your two-wheeler insurance. It is a safety tip that will protect your asset in case of a mishap. It is mandatory by law, and you should have adequate cover for your two-wheeler. We at Bharti AXA GI provide two-wheeler insurance that covers majority of damages and losses. You can buy add-ons such as depreciation cover to get maximum benefits in case of a trip to the workshop.
