The Manali-Leh highway that connects Leh-Ladakh to Manali through Lahaul and Spiti valley is among the most beautiful roads you can drive on. This 474 km long trip with elevation reaching above 4,000 metres is to be made to believe. Here are six reasons why you have to experience the drive from Manali to Leh highway for its extreme scenic beauty.
The Rohtang Pass is closed due to snow from December to May. Once the Indian Army has got the snow cleared and inspected the road for safety, it is opened to the public. The pass offers a great view of the entire Solang Valley. If you are pressed for time and can’t go all the way, do take time out to drive up to the Rohtang opening.
The Taglang La pass in the Zanskar range is the third highest motorable pass in India. It is nestled at an altitude of 5,328 metres above sea level. As the water gushes down the pass, you may even have to get down your vehicle and walk along to get through. The drive-through will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life.
Take a little detour to visit the Gompas, some of the most exquisite monasteries in the world. The Thiksey monastery located at about 19km from Leh is the largest Gompa of Ladakh. From here, you would get a great view of the Indus Valley. Just off the highway is Ladakh’s wealthiest monastery – Hemis Monastery. It houses the largest Tankha in existence.
You would get to see many lakes on your ride from Manali to Leh. One of the most picturesque of these is the Suraj Tal at a height of 4,890 metres. It is the third highest lake in India, and 21st in the world another lovely view is offered by Deepak Tal.
Take a tour of Nubra Valley, Salt Lake Valley, Suru Valley, and many others on your trip along the Manali-Leh highway. Just after you cross the Rohtang Pass, make sure to visit Keylong. It seems like an oasis of green fields in the middle of snow-capped mountains.
The table top of the earth is stunning to look at. Ride by the Sumkhel Lungpa River to witness some of the most stunning sand and rock natural formations. The plain at an altitude of 4,500 meters is a delight for the bikers heading to Leh from Manali.
A drive to Manali to Leh is on everyone’s bucket list. Riding a bike or car on those beautiful roads surrounded by nature is an experience not to be missed. It is a destination that everyone must explore in his/her lifetime. But remember the more beautiful the surrounding, the more precaution you have to take while driving your car/bike.
