192

With dense forests, the Alps, rivers, lakes, a rich cultural heritage, stunning architecture, and highly developed modern cities, Germany attracts many global visitors every year.

If you have chosen Germany for your next international trip, here is our guide to some of the best sightseeing places in Germany.

Charlottenburg Palace, Berlin

The capital of Germany, Berlin is a city steeped in history and the primary centre of the country’s cultural scene in architecture, design, art, films, fashion and music. While you are most likely to begin your tour of Berlin at the city’s most visited and historic site, the Brandenburg Gate, symbolic of Germany’s reunification after the Berlin wall was torn down; you must definitely make time to visit some of the other attractions in the capital.

The 17th century Charlottenburg Palace is a magnificent structure that is well worth seeing. A fine example of the rich Baroque style of architecture, the palace and beautifully laid out expansive palace grounds are open to public viewing. You will be able to see the various wings and opulent rooms within the palace and view the fine porcelain ware, silver ware, crown jewels and other artefacts on display, to get an idea of how European royalty must have lived.

Museum Island on the River Spree a UNESCO World Heritage site containing the bust of Queen Nefertiti and the fabulous Berlin Cathedral in the same vicinity, are other top draws for visitors to Berlin.

Cologne Cathedral, Cologne

Cologne is the fourth largest German city and the opportunity to visit the third tallest and one of the best cathedrals in the world, is the key reason Cologne should be on your list of places to see in Germany.

Dominating the city skyline, Cologne Cathedral is an impressive structure that is truly justifying of all the praise showered upon it. Built in the Gothic style, the construction of this nearly 140 years old cathedral took over 600 years. With its tall spires, detailed and intricate carvings, high arched nave, Cologne Cathedral is equally attractive from the exterior and once you step inside. You will find it quite easy to locate the cathedral. Aside from being the most famous landmark in Cologne, it is conveniently located right next to the train station.

Cologne Cathedral is a breath-taking sight at night when it is all lit up and bathed in a warm golden glow.

Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria

If fairytales and castles captured your imagination as a child, visiting Neuschwanstein Castle is your chance to live out that childhood fantasy. Located in the very scenic Bavarian Alps in south-eastern Germany, this stunning castle rises high above from the midst of dense wooded forests and sharp mountain peaks, like something straight out of a Disney movie. In fact Neuschwanstein Castle was reportedly the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle in the popular Walt Disney movie. When you gaze at the picture perfect setting and the tall spires, turrets and overall appeal of the castle, it is not hard to understand why.

Neuschwanstein Castle is a favourite with tourists from around the world and is claimed to be the most photographed building in all of Germany. Enough reasons for you not to give this charming castle a miss when you take a vacation to Germany.
