Life and Expiry of Car Spare Parts

Life and Expiry of Car Spare Parts

When you go out to shop, you probably check the expiry date of each item you pick up. But most car enhusiasts do not realize that this applies to car parts as well. No car part is built to last forever, and using one beyond its expiry date is inviting trouble. Using an expired car part may even result in your car insurance claim being rejected. Here is a checklist of car parts and their typical expiry dates.

Child Seats

With time, the seat’s base can develop cracks and may shatter in a collision. Belts too may not function as intended after years of use. While the seat will have the expiry date stamped on it, most child seats have a life of six years from the date of manufacture.

AC Refrigerant

Ideally, you should get your car's AC serviced once a year – the same as the AC at your home. But in case you have missed getting it serviced, the first symptom you would experience is that it would not cool as much as did at the peak of its performance. If this happens, it may be time to get the AC refrigerant checked and refuelled.

Cabin Air Filter

While the actual life of your cabin air filter will depend on the air quality in the areas you drive in, typically these need to be replaced after 25,000km to 30,000km. A simple way to test if you need a replacement is to turn on your blower – if the noise goes up, but the airflow remains low, it is time for a replacement.

Airbags

Airbags are among the most important safety features in your cars. You should replace them, and the seat belts, every 10 years. That said, if you see any visible damage to the seat belts – get them replaced immediately and get the airbags checked as well.

Air filter

The air filter must be replaced every year. In case you drive more frequently than average, you should replace them as soon as you reach 20,000 kms. The expiry date is also mentioned in the unit – you should not use it beyond that even if you use your car sparingly.

Tyres

Tyres must be replaced every six years. Further, if the tread depth falls below 3mm – it is time to replace your tyres.

Engine oil

You should change engine oil every 10,000km. If you drive sparingly, you should change the oil every 18 months.

Brake oil

You should get your car’s braking system checked every 10,000km. The brake oil must be replaced every 3 years. If you see that the brake oil container looks dark, it may be time to replace the oil immediately.

Many insurance company offer add on covers on car insurance which cover cost of repair and replacement of spares of engine and gearbox parts.
