Fact #1: Orange Holds a Royal Fascination for the Dutch

No, you will not find the reason for this in the national flag of the Netherlands. Bright orange is the jersey colour of the national sports teams of Netherlands. It is also a colour that the Dutch associate with strongly as it symbolises national pride. The reason for their fascination with orange can actually be traced to the historical and cultural roots of the country’s royalty. Orange is the colour of the Dutch monarchy that hails from the House of Orange.

In a completely separate yet colour related context, in the 16th century Dutch farmers cross-bred and developed orange carrots for the first time that were then introduced to the rest of the world.

Fact #2: Tulips Are Not Originally From Netherlands

Believe it or not the famous tulips of Amsterdam are not indigenous to the Netherlands. In fact tulips were imported into the Netherlands from Turkey in the 16th century. Today of course the country is synonymous with tulips and is the world’s largest exporter of this exotic slender flower. Netherlands even celebrates an annual National Tulip Day in January, marking the official beginning of the tulip season that runs from March to May.
