Having to worry about luggage on a holiday is one of the last things you want. To get a break from that mundane routine, you decided on a spot, booked your flight in advance, made hotel reservations and bought travel insurance. How does travel insurance help?
When traveling, there is a high possibility of losing luggage in a mix-up. Fortunately, having a travel insurance protects you from various emergencies including total loss or delay in checked-in baggage. The insurer compensates you for a total loss of checked-in baggage caused by the airline as per your policy. Thus, you can be assured that you are not at loss.
What is the procedure?
There is a reason why you are advised to read your travel insurance policy carefully when you get it. It details all the terms and conditions of the policy and the required procedure to be followed when an emergency strikes. If you do not receive the baggage, contact the airline support staff to confirm the status. Once you are sure that the baggage is lost, obtain a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) immediately from the airline. You will have to submit the PIR while making a travel insurance claim online.
What are the documents required?
Generally, you are required to submit a list of documents to the insurer along with the claim, which may vary from insurer to insurer. These are usually the following:
Insurer’s claim form
A letter issued by the airline accepting their liability for loss
The proof of compensation received from airlines
If any of the lost items was more than Rs. 6000, a proof to validate the same
NEFT form and a pre-printed cancelled cheque
Copy of the passport and visa with the entry and exit stamps in India and abroad
How much can you claim for lost baggage?
The insurer compensates for your loss after you have filed the claim for the amount as per your travel insurance policy. The compensation is restricted to maximum 50% of sum assured for per piece of checked-in baggage. If you checked-in just one piece of bag, insurer is liable to pay 100% of the sum assured.
However, there is an asterisk marked on this clause, which indicates that the payment is subject to deductibles. It is an amount to be borne by the insured (i.e. you) for every claim made as specified in the policy on account of cost-sharing.
