Health Insurance for Specially-abled Individuals

86

Specially-abled individuals have special needs and therefore their health insurance must offer some extra benefits that ease their life. Earlier insurance companies had no special health insurance plans for people with disability (PWD), however, things are now evolving as some insurance companies are providing health insurance plans that are designed exclusively for specially-abled.

HERE’S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HEALTH INSURANCE FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY (PWD):

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE:

  1. Congenital disability: Someone who has a disability since their birth is said to have a congenital disability. This includes heart conditions, fragile X syndrome, etc.
  2. Accidental disability: When a person who meets with an accident becomes partially or completely handicapped due to the accident, then such a person is said to have an accidental disability.
  3. Mental disability: Any person who is mentally not fit (i.e. has psychiatric disorders, mental impairment, etc.) is said to be mentally disabled.

Those who have congenital and mental disability fall under the ‘high risk’ category of insurance, therefore they are not offered complete cover under a standard health insurance policy. However, there are many government-sponsored health insurance plans for specially-abled people.

FACTORS THAT DETERMINE WHETHER SPECIALLY-ABLED PEOPLE ARE ELIGIBLE FOR HEALTH INSURANCE OR NOT INCLUDE:

  1. Current state:
Before issuing health insurance to a person with a disability, insurance companies check the applicant’s current health state. They also take medical records of the past two or three months to decide whether they’re eligible for health insurance. If the applicant is suffering from any fatal disease, then the chances of approval become bleak.
  2. Family earning and dependency:
One of the main factors includes the applicant’s and his family’s earnings. This helps the health insurance company determine whether he/she will be able to pay the premium or not. Since the premium amount of such health insurance policies is relatively higher, it is crucial to check if they have the financial backing to pay.

TAX BENEFITS:

While the premium of a specially-abled person’s health insurance may be high, they are eligible for a special deduction under Section 80U of the Income Tax Act. This section permits partially disabled taxpayers a tax deduction for up to Rs 50,000 and severely disabled taxpayers can claim up to Rs. 1 lakh.
