Helpful Guide On How To Save Money On Your Health Insurance Plan

Having a health insurance policy saves you from burning a hole in your pocket in case of a medical emergency. Therefore, getting a good health cover is a key part of your financial plan. It becomes even more effective if you can get the right coverage at the lowest possible price. Remember, if you compromise on the coverage – the effectiveness of your insurance policy is drastically reduced in the times of crisis. Here are a few ways you can save on health insurance premium without giving up on the benefits associated.

Get health cover as early as possible

The best time to buy an insurance cover is when you are at the peak of your health i.e. you are young. This reduces premiums for two reasons:

  1. You are less at risk, therefore the chance that the insurer has to pay out is low
  2. You have a high life expectancy, and therefore the premiums can be collected over a `longer period

Buy top-up and super top-up insurance

You may have a group health insurance cover from your employer, but this may not provide sufficient coverage and you should consider getting a larger health cover. But instead of buying a regular health insurance policy – you can buy a top-up or a super top-up health insurance cover that only kicks in after you have exhausted the group health cover. This helps keep premiums low as the top-up insurance would have a large deductible.

Select long-term health insurance policy

Insurers provide a discount if you choose to renew your health insurance policy for 2 or 3 years at a time, instead of a one year period. This is simply because renewal rates on most insurance policies have traditionally been low. Additionally, the operations cost associated with policy renewal are reduced as well.

Opt for deductible and co-pay

One of the primary ways to reduce your insurance premiums is by agreeing for deductible or co-pay. It is important that you choose an amount that you are comfortable with – as these clauses require that you pay a part of the healthcare cost out of your pocket.

No claim bonus

If you have been keeping good health, and did not file a claim over the policy period – you are eligible for a no claim bonus on your health insurance premium. This is a cumulative bonus and can go from 5% of the premium to 50%.

Family floater plan

If you are a young family and all members are in relatively good health, you can save on premiums by getting a family floater plan rather than an individual plan for each of the family members. This allows for a larger sum assured to be shared among all the members at a relatively smaller premium. It works as not all the family members would need to claim insurance together.

These tips can help you save on your health insurance premiums significantly. If you think you are paying a high premium for the coverage you have and cannot find a way to reduce the same, you can opt to switch your insurance provider as well. You can transfer the same policy without a break in coverage, if needed.
