Guide You Need To Follow If You Are Switching Health Insurance Policies

While you do all the research before you buy a health insurance policy, you may realize after that this wasn’t the best choice for you. If the free look period is yet to expire, you can cancel the policy at no cost. If the free look period is already over, you can look to port your policy to another insurer.

IRDAI provides the following rights to anyone who wants to port their policy:

  1. You can port policies to and from both general insurance providers and specialize health insurance providers
  2. You can take advantage of portability for both individual health insurance policies and family floater plans
  3. The new insurer has to honour any credit that you had gained towards the waiting periods at your previous insurer
  4. The sum assured for the new policy cannot be lower than the original policy
  5. The port should be completed within the timelines established by IRDAI.

Remember that you can only port your policy at the time of policy renewal. You are not allowed to switch insurance providers in the middle of the policy period. Further, you can opt for new add-ons when switching insurers. The premium from the new provider will be based on their underwriting policies.

Here is a step by step guide to switching insurance provider:

  1. Apply for portability with your old insurer at least 45 days before the policy renewal date. The 45 day notice period has been mandated by IRDAI.
  2. Fill up the porting forms provided by the new insurer, and keep all the documents related to your current policy handy.
  3. The new insurer has to respond within a maximum of 15 days.
  4. If everything is okay, the health insurance policy will be ported within a seven day period.
  5. All the required information will be filled in from your old policy. The same will be uploaded on the IRDAI portal as well.
  6. If the new insurer needed any additional information, this needs to be communicated within 15 days from the time of application. If the insurer does not decline the proposal within this period – he is bound to provide the coverage.

Remember that the policies should be like for like when porting from one insurer to another. But when should you consider porting your health insurance policy?

  1. You uncover some hidden clause that changes the nature of the coverage provided. In such a case, you can choose to switch to a more transparent provider.
  2. The claims settlement ratio of your insurer is low.
  3. The insurer has gone back on the promises made to you, or you have experienced bad service and no more want to work with the insurer.
  4. You need specialized services that your current insurer does not provide.
  5. You have come across a better product offering.
  6. The premium that the new insurer charges is significantly lower than the current premium you have to pay
  7. You are looking for additional covers that are not available with your current provider or are prohibitively costly.
