Need To Change Something In Your Two-Wheeler Insurance Policy? Follow This Helpful Guide

As a conscientious rider, you must know how to choose a bike insurance policy. A lot of people end up buying a cheap policy owing to legal requirements (it is a criminal offence to not own insurance policy for your bike) but miss out on the fact that many such policies do not provide comprehensive cover. You can switch your bike insurance company over to a different issuer during the policy period and a refund can be demanded from the existing provider. Different areas like the insurance policy, vehicle, geography, and financial capacity need to be evaluated before changing your existing bike policy.

Understanding the Mechanics of the Two-Wheeler

A two-wheeler’s Insured Declared Value (IDV), which is the market value of the two-wheeler after adjusting depreciation, is one of the most important elements to understand because the insurance company’s liability is limited to the IDV declared in the policy. Apart from that, a lot of insurance policies depend upon the engine capacity of the two-wheeler. Therefore, a brief understanding of what policy would concur for the engine capacity would help in determining the sum assured.

Type of Cover

Not so costly policies, more often than not, cover only third-party damages, leaving aside the cover for the rider, her own vehicle, and other risks. A mindful decision is to select a bike policy that covers damages to the third party, the owner’s vehicle, and the owner herself in case of injury or death in an accident. Although this would mean paying more out of the pocket, the comprehensive benefits are a value-for-money.

Another aspect to be taken care of is the policy duration as most bike policies cover only for a year. An annual renewal depends upon the market rate of the premiums. Therefore, in case of fluctuations in the policy premium, a long-term, usually, a 3-year policy, would stagnate the annual premium.

Other Handy Information You Need to be Mindful of

  • During the time of transfer of two-wheeler ownership, make sure you remember to transfer the policy in the buyer’s name. Also, while changing your two-wheeler, transfer the policy to the new vehicle.
  • A lot of policies disclose the intimation period of the claim from the moment of the incident. Follow the stipulated time-frame to avoid nullifying the claim.
  • Check for any no-claim bonuses offered by your policy. A no-claim bonus (NCB), an amount between 10-50% of the premium, accumulates when no claim has been filed in a year. NCB is used to reduce the premium amount for the succeeding year.

A two-wheeler insurance policy should be carefully chosen based on the various factors that we just discussed. Bharti AXA had a comprehensive policy which covers you with third party damage, own vehicle damage, rider damage in case of injury or death in an accident, and even depreciation.
