Exploring Food Culture Of Germany

Wondering what to eat on your trip to Germany? Here’s a list of traditional dishes that will help you set out on an authentic culinary excursion in the country:

  • Sauerbraten (Roast Beef Stew)

Sauerbraten is considered to be one of the national dishes of Germany, wherein the meat is braised for hours, making it incredibly soft and tender. So, meat lovers when you are in Germany, giving this dish a miss would be a betrayal to your tummy.

  • Bratwurst (Sausage)

When in Germany, eating wurst (sausage) is essential to give your taste buds the authentic taste of sausage that it deserves. While there are around 1500 different types of Wurst (sausage) that German cuisine has to offer, Bratwurst is the most popular amongst them. The history of this sausage dates back to 1313.

  • Rinderroulade (Beef Roll)

A favorite among the Germans, Rinderroulade is a beef roll packed with different flavors in one single dish. This wholesome dish is usually made by wrapping thin slices of beef around bacon, onions, pickles, and mustard and is then roasted with red wine to produce a dark rich sauce jam packed with flavors.

  • Flammkuchen (German Pizza)

Do not fear when this impressive pizza is served to you as it is a fairly light dish with crispy, cracker-like crust, topped with crème fraîche, sliced onions, marjoram and bits of bacon, etc.

  • Kartoffelkloesse (Potato Dumpling)

A great standalone dish for vegetarians— Kartoffelkloesse is a German potato dumpling made in two ways: one with cooked potatoes and the other with a mixture of cooked and raw potatoes. These dumplings are usually served with some gravy.

  • Black Forest Gateau (Balck Forest Cake)

You might have tried several versions of black forest cake but eating it at the place where it all began makes it even more special. The decadent Black Forest Gateau is the English name for dessert Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte that originated in 1915.

  • Berliner or Krapfen (Doughnut)

Love doughnuts? Then you must try the traditional Berliner, originally known as ‘Berliner Pfannkuchen’ meaning ‘Pancake from Berlin’. This German doughnut is deep fried and is filled with marmalade or jam filling.

To make the most of regional cuisines, enquire about the local dishes, preferably from a local themselves.

So now that you have an idea about the best of Germany’s culinary experiences, start enquiring about the Germany travel insurance plans and suitable Germany visa types. For a detailed guide on planning a trip to Germany, read ‘How To Plan A Trip To Germany.’

Guten Appetit!
