The DIY Bike Cleaning and Polishing Guide

The DIY Bike Cleaning and Polishing Guide

Bike lovers do whatever possible to protect their bike. They go all out from taking care of it, to getting it serviced at regular intervals, and getting a two-wheeler insurance to safeguard it from damages and theft. But when it comes to day-to-day maintenance, the one thing that can be done is to clean and maintain their bike regularly.

For professional bike riders, taking care of their bikes is easy. But for those who are new, here’s a do-it-yourself guide to clean and polish their bike.

1. Washing
The first step to maintaining your bike is to wash it regularly. You can wash it once or twice a week, depending on how dirty your bike gets. To begin the process, first soak a cloth with water and dab it all over your bike; this will dislodge the dust and make it easier for you to take it off. You could use a hose to wash the bike. Next, you can add some liquid soap which is exclusively meant for bikes. These are readily available in the market. Read the instructions and measure the water ratio before mixing it in the bucket.

What you should be aware of is the electric wires on your bike, make sure to not soak them or tug at them too much.

2. Drying
Once you’ve got all the dirt washed off, you can wipe the bike dry and ensure that excess water is drained out. The last wipe can be with a soft cloth so that the bike shines clean. Ensure to wipe all the places where the bike could have accumulated excess water- the petrol key lid for instance. By draining this excess water, you’re safeguarding your bike from getting rusted.

3. Polishing
Polish helps in maintaining the lustrous shine of your bike, giving it the quality of being new. It also adds an additional protective layer to your bike. There are two types of polish available in the market - wax polish or regular polish. You could use regular polish once a week and wax polish maybe once a month. Apply the polish on a sponge and spread it across your bike in circular motion. Once you’ve spread it evenly across the bike, you can let it sit there for 15 minutes. Once the polish has stayed on for 15 minutes, you can take a soft cloth and buff it out in a circular motion. This can help you get the shine better. Once you are done, you will be able to witness the shine of your charming bike and that your hard work will have paid off.

Taking care of your bike regularly, helps it maintain for a longer period. This comes in handy when you wish to sell your bike. Another tip is to always renew your two-wheeler insurance before it expires to make the most of the benefits you have gathered by paying the two-wheeler insurance premiums. Regular maintenance today will lead to better performance tomorrow.
