New Zealand also boasts of advanced and culturally diverse urban cities such as Auckland, Christchurch, Hamilton and the capital Wellington that are an absolute delight to explore.

New Zealand is a country that holds special interest for the adventurous tourist who sets out to seek the thrill of taming rugged and breathtaking new terrain. But even if you are not particularly outdoorsy, New Zealand is still a fantastic must-visit country with plenty to keep you engrossed. Which leads us to the question, which is the best season to visit New Zealand?

Seasons in New Zealand

Depending on your weather and activity preference, any season is the best season to visit New Zealand. With an extreme south western hemisphere location, New Zealand experiences summer season from the month of December through to March. This is the time of year when New Zealand receives maximum visitors as it the perfect season to put on hiking shoes and travel extensively around the vast outdoors on both the North and South Islands.

March to May is autumn when nature puts on a spectacular show with a widespread carpet of red and gold foliage. Winter season commences around June and lasts till September after which there is a short spring followed by the onset of summer once again. However regardless of which season you chose to visit, one should be prepared for a drizzle or light showers anytime and anywhere you go in New Zealand.

Summers (December – March) – New Zealand looks gorgeous in the summers. The long sunny summer days are very pleasant with day time temperatures hovering around 22 to 25 degrees Celsius. This is the best season to go hiking in the mountains, visit the many national parks and enjoy New Zealand’s long coastline, basking on the golden beaches, kayaking and surfing the waves.

There is plenty to see and do on North Island. Rotorua is famous for its geothermal hot springs in vivid colour and formation. Try zorbing, white water rafting, kayaking and paddle boarding at Lake Rotoiti. And the Waitomo caves just south of Auckland, naturally lit by thousands of glow worms is quite a special sight.

You can also make the most of the summer to visit beautiful wine country on both North and South Island.

Spring (October – November)To enjoy New Zealand without much of the tourist crowd milling about and when the weather is still mild and relatively pleasant you should make your way there during October-November when it is spring season. You could even benefit from cheaper flight and accommodation cost since the Christmas and New Year holiday season falls in the middle of New Zealand’s summer time making prices sky rocket.

Winters (June – September)If the crisp winter air and excitement of mountain sports such as skiing is what draws you to New Zealand then the months of June to September would be the ideal season to visit New Zealand. The snow covered Southern Alps look magnificent in winter. However keep in mind that daylight is for a short time in winter so you will need to get a move on quite early even on freezing cold mornings. Also the mountains and general topography of the wild and rugged South Island is more challenging and less gentle compared to the North Island.

New Zealand being one of the safest countries that one can ever travel to, it also makes for an apt destination choice if you are keen on solo travel. But before you back your bags and set out on your exciting trip to New Zealand you should make it a point to get travel insurance. In spite of being such a safe travel destination, it is advisable not to take any unnecessary travel risks in a foreign country. This is where your travel insurance policy kicks in to safeguard you financially in case of any accident, mishap, loss of belongings or an unforeseen medical emergency. Buying travel insurance is absolutely essential to secure your trip to New Zealand so make sure you don’t leave home without it.
