Best Beaches To Visit On Your Trip To Sri Lanka

We all need to take time out from our chaotic urban lives to travel the world and rejuvenate ourselves in the process. If your idea of a dream vacation is finding yourself amidst golden stretches of sandy beach, vivid blue waters, watching the surf and waves, with palm trees swaying gently in the sea breeze, Sri Lanka is an excellent choice.

With a beautiful uninterrupted coastline Sri Lanka can leave you spoilt for choice, being blessed with some of the finest beaches in the world. Whichever coast of Sri Lanka you choose to explore, you will have wonderful beaches to discover. Here is our pick of the best ones.

West Coast

Bentota Easily reachable from the capital Colombo, Bentota is one of the most beautiful, well-developed and popular tourist beaches along Sri Lanka’s west coast. There are many resorts and boutique hotels lining Bentota beach where you can check in to spend a couple of days. Along with enjoying a swim in the crystal clear waters, soaking up some sun and taking long walks along the length of this serene sandy beach, you can try out aqua sports like water jet skiing and kayaking. The tranquil waters of the Bentota lagoon make it a perfect spot for water sports.

East Coast

Pigeon Island For a spectacular scuba diving experience where you can get up close with colourful fish swimming around coral reefs, sea turtles and maybe even a reef shark, you should definitely visit Pigeon Island. Located just off the east coast in Trincomalee District, housing a wealth of protected marine life, Pigeon Island is one of Sri Lanka’s two marine parks with small yet picturesque rocky white sand beaches.

South Coast

Unawatuna Among the most gorgeous beaches in Sri Lanka, Unawatuna has a cosy feel and is perfect for a family beach holiday. The cosy idyllic bay here has gentle waves where you can take a relaxed swim. The soft sandy beach itself is very manageable and can be covered in less than half an hour. You will find Unawatuna dotted with lots of small shops, cafes and eating joints where you can grab a bite.

Mirissa Whale-watching is the highlight of this lovely stretch of fine sandy beach located in Mirissa village at the southern tip of the island nation. Join one of the whale-watching excursions to spot these magnificent creatures in the clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean. If you are lucky you may even spot a few dolphins. The best time to visit Marissa is December to April. The waves here are perfect for surfing and snorkelling so do make the most of your beach time at Mirissa.

So if you are set to spend your next holiday at these fabulous beaches, grab a Sri Lanka Travel Guide, get to know the visa requirements for Sri Lanka and start planning your trip. Be sure to include Travel Insurance for Sri Lanka. Buying overseas travel insurance is necessary to cover you in case your trip is cancelled or important documents like your passport or even your luggage gets lost or misplaced, ensuring that you are not stuck in a foreign country.

While in Sri Lanka, don’t miss out on trying some great seafood and other local dishes prepared in traditional Sri Lankan style of cooking.
