Top Safari destination you must visit

Dictionary.com defines the word 'safari' as "a journey or expedition, for hunting, exploration, or investigation, especially in eastern Africa". But loosely it is also used for similar expeditions elsewhere in the world. Choosing a safari destination can be tough. Some are ideal for family holidays, some for romance, some for bird-watchers, etc. There are travel agencies which provide you a total A-Z package for the safari, including travel insurance. But the most enjoyable and cost-effective way is to rent a vehicle and drive through. Let’s look at the top safari destinations in the world.

Kruger National Park

Thrown open in 1927, this is one of the largest and most popular African safaris. Spread over 12,000 sq. kms., this park hosts lions, rhinos, leopards, buffalos, elephants, apart from more than 500 bird species, 120 reptile species, and over 80 mammal species. Located in South Africa, you will not be allowed to drive faster than 50 kmph in this park.

Ranthambore National Park

This park was established in 1973 in Rajasthan to protect the Bengal tigers, the biggest of the wild cats. But apart from the tigers, you will also find many species of birds and reptiles in this park. While you are on this safari, do not miss the PadamTalav or the Jogi Mahal, great places to take a break while on this safari. The largest Indian tree, the Banyan tree, can also be found in abundance in this park.

Maasai Mara

Spread over 965 sq. kms., this park is situated in southwestern Kenya, on its border with Tanzanian. The wildlife in this park includes lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos. During the ‘Great Migration’ from July to October, about 1.8 million different species of wild animals migrate here for its pleasant weather conditions. Do not miss this overwhelming spectacle.

Arusha National Park

This park is located on Mount Meru, the second highest peak of Tanzania after Mount Kilimanjaro. Covering an area of 60sq. kms., this park is a sight to behold for safari lovers. The wildlife you can witness in this park include the giraffe, buffalos, zebras, colobus monkey, the blue monkey, flamingos, African elephants, lions, and even leopard. But the park is most famous for its prolific feathery creatures, the birds.

Yala National Park

This most famous wildlife sanctuary of Sri Lanka attracts more than 2 lakh tourists every year. The Yala is a combination of 6 national parks, established in 1900 to protect the diversity of animals, plants and reptiles living here. Besides, there are over 200 bird species, over 40 species of mammals and it also has a dense population of leopards.

Victoria Falls

Listed by CNN as one of the 7 wonders of the world, the Victoria Falls are situated on the Zambezi River, flanked by Zambia and Zimbabwe. It is 360 feet high, and attracts more than 4 lakh tourists every year. Safari enthusiasts would do well to visit this site between September and December, of course with a travel insurance policy, to see the naturally formed spectacle in the shape of an armchair called the "Devil's Pool".

Etosha National Park

Situated in north-western Namibia, this park is spread over 22,270 sq. kms. It is home to the Black Rhinoceros, a species on the brink of extinction. A host to more than 100 mammals, over 300 bird species, and over 100 species of reptiles, the Etosha is among the largest wildlife reserves.

While traveling to any of these wildlife sanctuaries, you should take a travel insurance to keep yourself safe from all kinds of illnesses, injuries, theft, etc. Bharti AXA provides you the- travel insurance policies, so that you can really enjoy your wildlife safaris.
