5 Things You Should Not Do After a Car Accident

5 Things You Should Not Do After a Car Accident

A car accident can be an overwhelming experience. Along with unfortunate injuries sustained in some cases, you also should deal with the damage to your car, liability issues and possible traffic citations. However, there are certain things you must avoid doing right after a car accident.

  1. Escape the Scene

Irrespective of the degree of damage, whether it’s just a bump on the car, a minor collision or no injuries sustained, it is against the law to drive away from the scene. Regardless of whether the wreck is serious or not, you must always stop, and check on the other person involved. It is considered a crime to shy away from the scene.  In addition, if someone is injured, you are required to provide assistance to them, including transporting them to a hospital if required.

  1. Forget to Report the Incident

By law, you are required to inform the Police of the jurisdiction in which the accident has taken place. A Police report will include critical information about the car accident, including road conditions, details of witnesses, and an official write-up of how the accident occurred. The degree of damage doesn’t alter the fact that it is imperative to report the incident. If you fail to report, by law it means you are running the risk of being charged with fleeing from the scene. This is considered a crime and could result in hefty increase in your car insurance quotes, fine and in certain cases serving time in jail.

  1. Lose Your Cool

A car accident can be an upsetting experience that plays havock with your emotions. At such times, it is advised to not lose your cool and not get angry with the party involved, regardless of whose fault it was. Instead, try to remain calm and gauge the situation objectively.  Address the people who are included to see if any injury has been sustained.

  1. Forget To Document the Accident

Before leaving the scene of the accident, remember to take down as much as information as possible. If you have a camera at your disposal, take pictures of the scene of accident, record license plate numbers and images of the damaged parts of the car. Take down the names and contact information of all the parties involved in the accident. Take down the details of the insurance providers of the involved party too. If there are any witnesses to the accident, ask them to write a short statement of what they say and take down their names and contact details. Most importantly, take note of the time and date of the accident as well as the weather conditions of that day.

In case you forget to document the car accident, it is difficult to prove what happened in court in case either party files a lawsuit. Moreover, your insurance provider will also want to know this information.

  1. Neglect the Aftermath

Being involved in a car accident is a difficult situation, but what follows after is the real hard part. First, you will need medical treatment if you have injuries. You will need to contact your car accident insurance provider and interact with the insurance providers of the involved party. It is advised to pay attention to these tasks because it only gets worse if avoided. Also, consider taking the advice of an experienced car accident lawyer to help you deal with the accident and the aftermath. Follow the same steps if you have applied for a car insurance online.

Car accidents can be a traumatising incident. But fleeing away from the scene or not following up as required simply magnify the severity of the issue. It is best if you keep your cool and follow the drill. Don’t forget to follow up with your insurance provider and reduce the severity of the consequences.
