What To Do In Case You Meet An Accident On Road

Roads in India can be very dangerous to drive on. Accidents are frequent if you are not alert and vigilant behind the wheels. Indian roads claimed a whopping 1.47 lakh lives in 2017. This does not include those who get injured. The figure for that is three to four times higher than those who die in road accidents.

What to Do in Case of Accident on Road?

The Motor Vehicles Act in India has made it compulsory for all vehicle owners to purchase the basic car insurance that offers security against liability of death, bodily injury or damage to property of the third party. However, if you are in a car accident, here are the 5 things that you must do:

1. Look for Safety

The first thing that you should do is to check if you are safe. This will allow you to help your fellow passengers or anyone else who might have been affected by the accident. If you are injured, call emergency services for help. If you are seriously injured, then try not to move at all. Get someone close-by to call the police and medical services for assistance.

You may not realise the extent of your injuries right away. Therefore, get yourself medically checked as soon as you are able to get away from the accident site.

If you have not received any serious injuries, ensure that you reach a safety zone that is away from the ongoing traffic. It is essential for you to do that especially if the accident has taken place in low light, slippery roads, blind turns, etc.

Upon taking cognisance of what has happened, take some time to assess the entire episode with a clear perspective.

2. Check to See If You or Anyone Else Has Been Injured

As you arrive at the safety zone, take time to ascertain that you and everyone else involved in the car accident are safe. Run a check on any injuries that may have occurred as a result of the incident. It is best not to engage in any verbal discussion or debate about the accident at this point in time.

If you know that your car is safe to drive, then move it to the side of the road. If not, then leave it where it is to be towed by the municipal department. Avoid looking at the condition of your vehicle. Instead, be more concerned about the health and safety of everyone involved in the incident.

3. File A Police Report

Once you and everyone else party to the accident have gotten a clean chit on safety, you need to file a police report with the nearest police station immediately. Include all the information that you can recall. If possible, take photographs on your mobile phone and pass it on to the Officer-In-Charge of the accident case.

4. Exchange Information

In due course of time, you will be filing a claim for damages with your car insurance provider. To ensure that the process is smooth and seamless, take detailed notes of the accident and the extent of damage that the car has suffered.

Make it a point to take note of the traffic levels and the current weather and road conditions. Exchange contact and insurance information with all parties concerned in the accident, including witnesses or any bystanders. Capture the following points:

  • Full name and contact information
  • Insurance company and policy number
  • Driver's license and license plate number
  • Type, colour and model of vehicle
  • Location of accident

5. Document the Accident To File Your Insurance Claim

In order to ensure that your car insurance provider does not reject your claim, following these steps are essential:

  • Once the police arrive on the scene of the accident, get their names, badge number for identification purposes later on.
  • Request the police officers how you can obtain a copy of the accident report as you will have to file a copy of it along with your claim to the insurance company.
  • If you have not been seriously injured, then you must take pictures of your vehicle from different angles on your smartphone right after the accident. It should be able to showcase the extent of damage that the car has undergone. Remember to take pictures of the license plate of the other vehicle involved in the accident too. All this will help support your car insurance claim.

Lastly, call your insurance company, if possible, from the scene of the accident. They will be able to guide you on the claim process and what you are expected to do. Following these guidelines will make the process seamless and get your vehicle back on the road as fast as possible.
